Greetings all, long time lurker and minor escapist, first time poster in this forum.
I was cleaning out my magic files the other day and came upon a blueprint sold by Tannens (and presumably still is) for the "New Triple Escape Mystery." It's a large, shelved cabinet where the magi/escapist is locked inside three shelves and cabinet, and then of course, escapes. It's also described/pictured as number 24 in Byron Wel's "Great Illusions of Magic" book. While I realize it's not everyone's style, it seems a delicious premise but maybe not for modern audiences (as cover is required to escape, and no immediate hazard for impending death, like water). I was just curious if anyone had every performed it successfully, and if so, what type of reaction did you receive? How did you update it for modern audiences--or did you? All thoughts appreciated. I just saw it last night, as part of the Hall & Christ World of Wonders Side Show, which has been playing the New Jersey State Fair at the Meadowlands, in Secaucus.
It was presented as a quickie, along with some traditional sideshow acts and illusions. Since the show is a ten-in-one, there were ten acts in about 20 minutes...not much time to develop anything. But that's the necessity of that kind of show. I could see potential for a different routining.

Yup, just stopped to visit Ward and Chris. I don't know about you, but the way my end of the business works, I don't get to see friends too often.
Oh, phooey! I would love to meet y'all!

I built and used one as a part of a comedy sketch. It had a big sign saying, "Wood Shed" on it and it was made to look rustic. Three shelves held you in. The patter included being taken to such a place a lot when I was young and after awhile a means was needed to just keep me there.
It sat stage right with two screens angled obstructing view of the rear of the cabinet. Later in the show I vanished from a spiker-type apparatus and was, you guessed it, back in the wood shed. The punch line, "Why were you surprised? I told you I always ended up in here!" Its easy to build. Hinges can be done so that it pulls down quickly and sets up equally as fast. I didn't like mine because of its angle iron frame. It made it unnecessarily heavy. So when I moved my shop it went to the fire heap along with many other large escapes. I'll build one now that has either an aluminum or 2x2 frame. It doesn't take much stress so it doesn't need to be heavily built. Its cheap to build too. I think the "Wood Shed" sign I had made was 50% of the construction costs! Just my 2 cents... Clyde |

I keep thinking of it with books on the shelves, knickknacks, something. Going into the cabinet is to either put or get the thing on the shelf.
