I was wondering if anyone would be willing to give me some feedback, good or bad, on an idea I had for a stage name.
I do magic for all ages, but I am wanting to seperate my kid show stuff from the adult stuff and close-up magic. I am designing a character and now I need a name. I am silly by nature with children so my character will be silly as well. My real name is Dorian so I am look to capatalize on that. I am also an Apple devote' (you know, the computer) as I am a graphic designer as well. Apple puts an "i" in front of EVERYTHING, so I thought I would too. What I came up with was "iDini". I could use phrases throughout the show like "that's D'riffic"! and "D'liteful" yadda yadda yadda. I am going to wear blue jeans with colorful patches, a bright yellow tshirt with a logo on it, suspenders and some great converse canvas shoes I just found. Also a colorful baseball cap or propeller hat. Am I way off base here everyone, or am I on the right track? Thanks in advance for your help, Dorian LaChance

Dorian,
Its a great start -- now try some more. Our first ideas (for anything) are often good, which keeps us from trying more ideas and getting to great. Challenge yourself to think up 30 other names, then start testing them with friends, customers, etc. CW guy |

I'm going to go out on a limb here. I am not a fan of the 'ini' bunch, may I suggest....get ready for it.... Dorian? It is an unusual name but has a nice sound to it and I think kids will remember it. I doubt most people need a stage name to be honest with you.

One little thing, I think its important to link your character name to a website. So choose a name and see if you can also register that as a domain name.

Andy is the man! The website runs the world, so check the web first. I did not think about that as I was reading the thread. It is so TRUE!

Dorian LaChance actually sounds good as it is.
You can try the formula I used. Take your first name, then your middle and add an s. that's how I got my stage name, Matt Stevens.

I have been using Dorian and I do see the value of it. I guess I just thought that I needed to seperate my kid stuff even more from the close-up and adult stuff and to use a different name would be the way to go. But then again, I could have adults that attend my kid shows calling iDini at the adults shows.
Is there any value in creating a stage name for my kid shows???? Thanks everyone, Dorian

Stage names do separate shows. I would also look different for each show to minimize the "bleed-over". Also, when someone calls you and asks for "XXXX" you immediately know the show/age group for which they are looking.
I have found that if you pursue magic for adults, it is important to separate the images, because adults will often not want to hire a "kiddy" performer, and wrongly think that an adult performer takes more skill. The skills are different. On the other hand, I have found that advertising more as an "adult magician" does work well with kids shows, because people wrongly assume that if you can entertain adults, you can entertain kids. |
