Okay, I'm exercising my bragging rights here...on both my kids!!
My ten year old placed third in the school's math fair last week. He did a project on what the American Flag would look like if the number of stripes equalled the number of stars....which was the original intention of our founding fathers (notice how the Star Spangled Banner Flag has 15 stripes). He even had someone from the local American Legion office come by the shcool and take pictures and talk to him! Now, for my five year old! After six months of tempers flaring on both sides....and much frustration also on both sides....my five year old finally learned how to tie his shoes!!! I finally found the right thing to bribe him! We had a shoe tying lesson yesterday before we went out. I told him that if he could tie his shoes all by himself before we left, I'd get him some Yu-Gi-Oh cards. It wasn't five minutes before he tied his shoes for the first time all by himself!!! So, I am exercising my bragging rights on both my kids!! Margarette

Good show for all three of you!
Isn’t it ironic that an escape artiste has to struggle to teach her kid knots?!? I’d like to see that flag!

You can...it's in the Smithsonian. And as long as we're on brag patrol...my (almost) 16-year-old daughter is aceing her midterms...she, BTW, has begun referring to my car as "my car." My 11.5-year-old other daughter is in the school musical, scored five points in her basketball team's win last week, and is getting great grades in sixth grade as well. On the other hand, I'm just muddling along...

Steve,
I have seen the “Star Spangled Banner” literally hundreds of times (I used to live in Annapolis, just 22 miles a way). The flag I want to see is the one made by Margarette’s son. The one based on the original intention, i.e., the one with 50 stars and 50 stripes.

Well as long as we are bragging bout kids my 4 month old is just perfect!! Alot of you will know what I am going though as a Father at the moment. Every day Connor learns something new. He has just started eating solids (1 meal after his night feed) and he stands, smiles, chats (in his own little language), splashes in the bath, chews on his hands and feet, grabs, pulls, sits up and all those other things that make a Dad proud to be a Dad.
Just thought Id tell you all!

Yu-Gi-Oh.....the latest and greatest thing in Anime since Pokemon! Actually, I think what it is is the oldest members of the Pokemon generation are growing up and growing out of Pokemon, and so they came up with Yu-Gi-Oh to keep these kids interested. Actually, it's kinda cool...my kids have given me lessons in the proper duel techniques....and most important of all...the most powerful duel monster is "the....unstoppable.....EXODIA!!!!!!" This is a set of five cards, that if purchased from an individual or on the internet will cost anywhere between $150-$200. Geez....it's sad that I actually know this stuff!!!

It sounds like "Yu-Gi-Oh" is some sort of card game, but I'm lost on what "Anime" and "Pokemon" are. Whatever they are, it seemed to work!
Still, congrats on your kids' victories! It's good to hear about neat stuff like this. Tying my own shoes initially took me about 6 months. A Faro shuffle? 4 days to get it where I could do it regularly. **sheesh** I do have a rather funny picture in my head of what will happen when one of your kids' teachers say, "OK, kids, bring in your parents, and have them explain what they do for a living..." |

Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon are both card games. Anime is, from what I understand, cartoon animation that originated in Japan. The cards used for the games are available in both English and Japanese. In fact, Nintendo, the people who marketed Pokemon, got in trouble with Uri Geller because the Pokemon, Kadabra (a psychic pokemon and the second evolution in the series of Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam), was shown holding two bent spoons, and also, the Japanese version of the card contained the Japanese Kanji symbol for "good luck" which bears striking similarity to the Nazi swastika. I never heard how that lawsuit ended, though. Like I said....it's scary that I know all this!!!
As for bringing parents in....actually, when my oldest was in the second grade, I was asked to speak to several classes during "Career Week." Of course, I got lots of reactions when I ended my presentations with the torn and restored Pokemon card routine!!

Actually, Margaret, Exodia isn't completely unstoppable. I watch the episodes with my youngest sister when she gets home from 6th grade. There are 3 God cards that, when combined with the Polymerization card, can beat even Exodia. The last I checked, a group of rogue players had 2 of the cards and Seto Kaiba owns one. Also, if a player has nothing but Exodia cards in his hand he can only play Exodia body parts until the full creature is assembled. Yugi beat just such a duelist in a recent episode.

I saw that series of episodes....Yugi beat Rare Hunter. It was after the last episode that I was given a lesson in the God Cards, and that it was possible for Exodia to be beaten. Like I said...it's scary....or maybe a bit sad....that I actually know this stuff!!
My youngest son, the one who recently learned to tie his shoes, has a fascination with my handcuffs. I'm just expecting a phone call from the school asking my why my son has a pair of handcuffs in his backpack! Margarette

Just wait for his first talant show.
The only problem I see is that kids always like to top there parents. The only things my dad knows about magic is from me talking to him about it but I garentee if he was a magician then i would have said something like "o yeah you've done the straight jacket escape upside down? well watch me do it under water!" If you don't like exposure, don't read this next post.
Today they revealed the method of magicians using "short cards" during the all-new episodes of Yu-gi-oh. As the story goes, the duelist (whose name was on the tip of my tounge a moment ago) used to be a world famous magician. Then he got into an accident onstage, and became deformed. He lost his girlfriend and Marek (the master Rare Hunter) promised he'd get the guy's girlfriend and the duelist back together if he beat Yugi in a duel. Well, it was Dark Magician (a dueling card) against Dark magician. They showed a few methods of how the deck can be manipulated. This surprised me as I figured a child wouldn't care anyway. Then again, Yugi isn't exactly meant for those under age 3.

Darn! I missed today's episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! Guess I'll just have to catch it on a rerun. I'm sure my kids will come home tomorrow telling me about it. I've tried explaining the short cards to my oldest son. He wants to learn the "Kiss the Magician" trick so he can do it for his little girlfriend. We've been working on the handling of it, but he can't quite get it down, yet. I also told him under no circumstances is he allowed to take that to school and do it...even if it's for a talent show! Although, he really doesn't need to do it for his little girlfriend anymore since she kissed him on the playground (told all her friends that she was whispering something to him and she lost her balance ) He'd kill me if he knew I was telling people all this!!

By the way-Seto Kaiba has a new outfit. The end of the show was pretty cool. Marek revealed that his back has tattoos of the twelve Millenium items. Also, he has an "agent" called the Silent Duelist waiting to battle Yugi. And this agent of his has one of the God cards.
Illusionist-I'm not IceRaven anymore.

No, they didn't tell me about the show, but I think I'll ask them about it. They do watch Yu-Gi-Oh in the afternoons. In fact, when it's over, that's the cue for the oldest to start his homework.
