I brought in a book manuscript to work today.
And printed out a few pages. And showed the printout to a few people. Without exception they all said "where did you get that?" Is this pretty much akin to when they say "how did you do that?" Ideas?

Yes kind of, as they are sort of asking, how did you create that.. I think!

I get a lot of people asking "Who are you and what are you doing in my house?".
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

My wife asked me that.

Neat stuff.
Ideas. It's cool the way the mind works. When at a loss for words, the first words spoken are usually pretty close to what the person really wants to say. Flip it around a bit and you'll get when they ask, "Where did you get that?", they're probably asking "Where can I get that?" Darn near the same thing happens when people ask, "How did you do that?" Deep down, they're asking, "How can I do that?" And I'm glad to see your manuscript is coming along.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

I guess Jon will now blame me for misleading Patrick.

'Where did you get that?"
Which words were stressed? What emotion was behind their query? Depending on your work relationships, it could have been a masked compliment, or a statement of surprise.

What book do you think it was? (hint, look at the date)

I think it's just a rhetorical statement of curiousity. Although in the case of asking "how do did you do that" I think it's a statement of wonderment(if that's a word). Like "that's not supposed to happen" but it did.

Did you tell them where you got it or keep it a secret?

Still, rather than "may I read it" or even "so what's the answer to the big questions..." it was a question whose polite short form answer would likely be less than useful. So why do they say such things? It's almost as odd as asking someone how much they paid for something.
