Good to see you as well, Mark. Hope all is going well for you. Anything can have some sort of danger. It is not until serious litigation occurs that changes are made and warning labels are attached. I have not heard of anyone choking on a balloon either.
I might just use that quote "Balloons are not a good source of fiber" next time I talk with the parents. Sounds like a fun way to warn them. I agree that we all need to take personal responsibility. If parents taught some of these kids to take responsibility for their own actions, instead of putting the blame on others, then they would not have wound up in some of the arrests we have made (damage to property, DUI, etc.). Just had a 21 year old die from a wreck. Seems she had some alcohol. My dad was an attorney for 51 years before he died. He taught me to take responsibility for my actions, something I taught my children and grandchild. Glenn

You are comparing the number of casualties to the number of deaths. Casualties are any loss of personnel. Casualties are counted by totaling deaths, wounded, MIA, and POW. Total Allied casualties on D-Day are estimated at 10,000...2500 dead. Total US Casualties in Iraq ... 58,783 as of august 2007. 30,710 by what are classified as hostile causes, and the remaining 28,073 from "non-hostile" causes whatever that means. Here is some more food for thought. Though they can not be considered casualties due to the fact that the have been discharged from the military, some 180,000 veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan have filed for disabiliy. This is a blatant failure of our media to report what is actually going on, only mentioning the deaths and leaving out all this other information. that said there have been between 600,000 and 700,000 iraqi civilian deaths directly attributed to the war. Always look further. I love Balloons. |

Oh and also....Nothing "ended" on May 1 2003.
and we don't just "have bases in iraq" We are deploying troops by the 1000's with no end in sight. (BTW: Your radio was most likely referring to US involvement in WWII)(And btw: those bases in germany are ironically where the war in Iraq was being planned...before 9/11/01!) YAY BALLOONS |

I will lead a balloon coalition into Iraq and Iran. We will make balloon hat in the worst provinces. Who is with me??? .....Hello ..... anyone there? guys?
I buzz back and forth between Talk, America right, Fox and Air America ...... the one that Pizzzes me off the most is Air America Or Airhead America. Might as well be headed up by Paris Hilton. They made the remark about it being the Bloodiest war ever. Randy Rhodes I believe. Or some other whiney girl. Funny though I am pro-military yet I won't make balloon weapons..... You know humor is the only thing missing from this war..... WWII there were so many jokes played on both sides. Today we are not even allowed to satire our enemy cause it might offend someone.

Obviously you did not look at this site: I did read quite a bit at that site, and "no" the site isn't credible on this issue, because as far as I can tell, the site never mentions it. It is about the legal issues regarding homicide and suicide. I even typed "balloon" into their search engine. I wouldn't have posted that the information wasn't there if I hadn't checked first. Not a single article I found there was about toy balloons. I only found one article about a child choking, and that was a child choking on a coin. Most articles were about some form of suicide, or death from obstruction by objects other than a balloon. Apparently a balloon is used in the operating room in some procedure. If you found something that is about toys and children, please post a link to it. I could be wrong, I can't always find things. But I certainly did look for quite a while. Again, to find about deaths to children from toy balloons, you have to as someone who works in Pediatric medicine. And, as I already posted, my wife spoke to a pediatrician about this issue, and he knew all about it. By the way, pediatricians do warn parents to keep small coins away from very young children. I don't see warning labels on food. WARNING ingesting food may be a choking hazard.... DUH!! Such warnings exist. They are in books for new parents. Also, the Heimlich maneuver is taught in First Aid courses, so choking on food is recognized as a hazard, even for adults. And, there are choking warnings on most small toys in a toy store. Matchbox cars have them. Others just have a warning that they are not for children 3 years old and under. Balloons aren't being singled out here. I have no issue with warnings. I separate that issue from the people who are crazy and want to ban balloons. I see a middle ground here.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

I love your posts Mark. Your hilarious & sensible.
Why don't you make toy weapons for kids though? Do you really tell a kid NO he can't have a sword? Thanks. |

While working restaurants, I will tell a kid "no" on the sword issue. Once I made 2 brothers swords in a Pizza Hut (and yes, I was working), they immediately got up and started swordfighting in the aisle. Short version of the story...server came along with food and drinks on a tray...2 heathens almost knocked her down, spilling food and drinks. Parents didn't even seem to care. I took it upon myself to NOT provide toys and IMDs to children who could destroy the world or the restaurant in which I'm working.

Ok, but whatever I make them they turn into a weapon...I still laugh at the mother who told her kid to pick something else when he wanted a GUN, so he finally picked a rabbit...he proceeded to turn it upside down, holding it by the ears then pointed it at her and "shot" her in the head with it.
The kids must ask you, WHY won't you make me a sword? Do you really go into some long political, moral or other type of rant? See, the problem wasn't your swords, the problem was the parents. Those kids would have been running around acting like fools with or without you there, and the parents would care less with or without you there. Don't blame yourself. And I'm not arguing with you, if it works for you great! I'm just interested, what do you tell them? Thanks! |

Hey all,
I am still in China and the internet is well sketchy at best. Thanks for the comments and the plug of my youtube Video. AshleyW I don't make weapons because I consider myself an artist when I work and not a balloon vending machine. My hats are way cooler than and sword or gun. Don't you think a boy would rather have a Shark or a Dinosaur instead? One more week here in Shanghai ......

I couldn't help laughing as I read this thread and how passionate everyone gets about this subject!
Bad to the Balloon described it right. Stupid people making stupid laws. Fired up by a media that loves a good crisis. Even if they have to make it up. Still, that is reality. If Steve's waiter had spilled a hot coffee on someone while avoiding his balloon sword, he probably would have got sued anyway. Heck, some family could get in an accident on the way home from seeing you perform, and say it was because they were distracted by the balloon poodle you made, and sue you for being so good. Even if you put a warning label on your animals, a good lawyer(or maybe I should say "skilled", since some might argue that the only good lawyer is a dead one) would probably argue that a warning label proves you knew full well how dangerous balloons were, and gave them to small children anyway! So until we all follow Shakespeare's advice on lawyers, the best bet is to have an umbrella liability policy. Mine's a rider on my homeowner's insurance, and protects me from most of these crazy layers. (And by the way, toomuchmagic, Bad to the Balloon is right about the war, too.) Willy |

I've read a number of threads about balloons, safety, and the heated debate about the ethics of using balloons.
I make balloons at every birthday party and restaurant that I work. I don't want to put any child at risk and moreover I don't want to put my own kids at risk (11 months old, 3 yrs old, and 5 yrs old). My kids have access to my balloons at home. I was actually unaware of the actually risks of deflated balloons. From now on, I will 'remind' parents of the risks of deflated balloons and I will be absolutely sure that all broken pieces of balloon are discarded. I will also have my 5 year old stay still if she blows up a balloon. I found all these threads about balloon safety helpful and thought provoking. Cheers! |
