The highlight of last Friday was my trip to Magic Land in Tokyo. Even though the place was not big or attractive at least from the outside, I had the pleasure of flipping through the various books and pamphlets on the shelves and skimming through their collection of magic while Mama san (Onosaka's wife who works there) was quietly chatting with me in English. Entering the shop wasn't like entering any of the magic shops I have visited before. The shop was literally packed with material on the shelves, on the ground and even to the ceiling. If you look up to the ceiling, you will see pictures of famous magicians with their signatures (Dingle, one of my all time favorite performers, was on there too). Being in the shop was like reading an encyclopedia of card tricks, waiting for us to find gems from it.
While I was busy browsing through the books and talking to Mama, Mr. Ton Onosaka suddenly walked into the shop!!! Of course, I had to tell him how much I like and admire Japanese magic and had to take a picture with him. And after a few more minutes, Mr. Shintaro Fujiyama and Mr. Magi Shiro walked into the shop too. Talk about luck! Of course, I talked to them and I even asked them to take a picture with me! As I have never met any well known magicians before other than Mr. Takeshi Nemoto who is more or less only known in Japan, I found this experience to be particularly fascinating and pleasing. I was there for about an hour or so and everybody was very friendly despite the fact that I was the only person there who didn't speak the local language. It is a place that I would definitely want to revisit again. It is also an experience that I will never forget. If any of you happen to plan a trip to Tokyo in the future, Magic Land should be on the top of your list of "places to see/visit." Best, Charles

Charles,
you are a lucky man . . . and a great description of your visit. I also had the pleasure to visit that unique shop. I can easily spend the whole afternoon there, drinking coffee and chatting with the folks. BTW - have you noticed that nobody tried to sell anything to you? Andy

Andy,
Now I understand why you can spend your whole afternoon there. In fact, I could spend a couple of nights there too (if they don't mind) !!! Going to Magic Land is kind of like going to any stationary shop (pardon if this comparison sounds a little weak). In other words, you do not need to worry about not leaving the shop without buying something. Even though Mama san and the other people talked to me (about where I am from, my age, my school etc), they never directly advertised their items to me unless I asked. Since this shop is located at a place that is not easy to find even to local people, I think anybody who enters the shop more or less has some background knowledge about magic. This, I think, is the main reason why they don't try to sell anything to me. Without being advertised or being "pressured", I can casually look through the stuff and get information on only the things that I am truly interested in. Best, Charles

I just returned from my second trip to Tokyo and had a great time visiting (among other things) Magicland. Before my trip, I was told that it is very difficult to find and pointed towards the website below:
http://www.nuuanu.k12.hi.us/nuuanuweb/as......and.html That website was pretty helpful to me for finding Magicland. But, had I not done some additional research with maps, etc., I probably would have gotten really lost. The thing I found most difficult was that there are something like 12 different exits from the subway station. If anyone is planning a visit to Tokyo and wants to stop in to Magicland, I've typed up a word document with pictures AND written directions. Send me a PM or e-mail if you would like a copy. In the meantime, here's the reader's digest version... Take the Metro (subway) to the Kayabacho station. Exit the station using exit #2. At the top of the stairs, continue straight ahead to the next intersection (Pepper Lunch restaurant on corner). Cross the street and turn right. Magicland is a few doors down on the left. It is just a single door with some Kanji writing above it (there's also a very SMALL sign on the wall next to the door. Go in and take the stairs to the third floor. I cannot stress enough how important it is to use EXIT #2 when leaving the subway station. It is actually pretty easy to find as long as you take EXIT NUMBER TWO!!!!! But from one of the other exits, you will almost certainly get LOST!!!! Bob DAY 2

I would like to know there is anything is 'must buy' in Magic Land.
The first thing comes into my mind is the Chinese Coin set with Jumbo Coin. Besides, anything you fellow magicians have been there comes to mind?

Charles,
Did they get to see you perform? Or were they aware of your ability?
