According to a brief history of palmistry, the gypsies started this saying to counter the church's warnings that fortune telling was the work of the devil. The gypsies explained that evil feared silver and the sign of the cross. The sign of the cross was made with the silver and the gypsy kept the coin. I do not know how factual this is, but it seems to be the story given in every account of palmistry I've seen. One short history is here: http://www.members.cox.net/mystics1/gcpg1.html

"The cards tell me that to remove
the curse that hangs above and around you, a dark skinned woman of Romanian lineage must make the sign of the cross upon your palm with a silver coin. I would be glad to serve the higher purposes of the cards, but I have no silver". The client's "loaned" silver coin is then folded within a torn out page from the Bible. It is stolen out by the reader and the page is then burned into ashes. No trace of the coin is found amongst the blackened residue. The coins absence provides evidence that the sitters money has been consumed by the curse that someone has placed upon it. It is clear that the client and his money are cursed, and that rhe dark surrounding cloud can only be removed by a woman of Romanian lineage. Alas, the proceedure for removing the jinx will prove to be quite costly. and will require subsequent visits to the 'advisor'. |
