Wow what a way to kick off the 20th season!
May the souls of the USS Indianapolis crew rest in peace. The way they went down is something I hope none of us ever have to face. I lived in the Indian Ocean for 4 months and all we did ALL day, EVERY day, was watch the SCHOOLS of Sharks swimming around the ship. Can’t even imagine what they must have gone through. True Heros! Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

There was no pier to dock the ship. We had to stay on board. So does that answer your question? Or better yet, smart-alec remark. |

When Justin was in and you got stationed in Diego Garcia you hoped the dang sharks would take you. It was a hole, completely, four months there was a very long time....it is a bit better now that it is completed from what I hear.
Here is the mystery of Diego Garcia. A destroyer tender pulls into port, it has young ladies on it, ugly ones. There are no women on Diego Garcia and most the guys have not seen a woman in months. During a traditional search on the quarterdeck a bowlegged young miss is found to have over $3000 in cash on her, she had ten bucks when she left the ship....how did she get that money? Oh, besides sharks Diego Garcia had poison sea snakes. For those keeping score the USS Indianapolis was sunk and the crew floated around for a few days and every so often a guy would be eaten by a shark. One second he is bobbing there the next he is pulled under and lunch. The reason no one saved them was they had delivered the atomic bomb and the regular Navy didn't know they were there so no rescuers were sent for a period of time. It was one of the most horrific events in US military history. If you was Jaws the nutty shark hunter was a survivor and there are still survivors out there. The CO survived and killed himself later. |

Back in the good ol' days Diego Garcia was considered the worse of the worse places to be stationed. When I went there for a couple days it was nothing but a flat nothing with nothing tents with seabees in it. I was on isolated duty and it was 1000x's better than Diego Garcia.

When I was there (1980) there was nothing there except sand and a few barracks. They had a tent where you could get watered down 3.2 beer. They also had Coconut Crabs that would eat all the vegetation (if you know what I mean...) so the poor guys who were stationed there had to rely on the ships that came from places like Tai Land, Hong Kong, etc, to supply provisions (If you know what I mean, and I think you do.)
Watching sharks and fishing was a daily routine. All the fish caught was cooked (to perfection) by our excellent ships chefs! A lot of my ships cooks were Phillipino and they knew how to cook fish! BTW: I was on a destroyer tender! One of the baddest mothers to ever float! And I must admit I loved every minute of it. I even miss it. |

Which destroyer tender? You were not a gal back then were you? I'm kidding! It was around, no, it was around 1980 or 81....

They tell the story of the USS Indianapolis in JAWS. One of the characters (Quint, the captain of the Orca) is supposed to be a survivor of the USS Indianapolis and he tells the story to the sheriff, while they are hunting Jaws.
