Hi,
I've just discovered this site from a search on the Gilbreath Principle - the "thing of terrifying beauty". The wife and I were watching a Max Maven DVD last night with it on and no matter how hard we tried (within reason), we still couldn't mess up the trick (The Mockingbird). I'm currently working through a number of DVDs I've bought - Max Maven, Banachek et al. I'm a science teacher with a special interest in physics for 11 to 18 year olds. I'm interested in using magic to enhance various aspects of the learning experience for the kids I teach. So far I've used sponge ball and appearing/disappearing hankie tricks for showing mass/energy conversion with my 17 year old students, along with a few card / mentalism tricks with my younger pupils simply to show that science and magic are similar - if you know the principles, you can amaze people with what you can do. What you would have been burned at the stake for 500 years ago, is simply science taken for granted today. After doing the PK Touch (Derren Brown style), I had a wonderful comment from the kids via my student teacher mentee who took the class of my students after doing the effect: "That Mr A - he's more than just a science teacher!". Kudos! At least it's helped them become more interested in science and my lessons as a result (it all helps with pushing up the grades). The mentalism effects seem to have the biggest impact although I'm nimbling up my fingers to do card effects for philosophy stuff I do too: Predestination vs freewill - quite good when you perform forces. Does anyone else in here use magic tricks in an educational environment and if so, how / where and how do the pupils respond? Cheers, Matt |
