Has anyone tried quick rune readings in a strolling venue? My thought is to have someone think of a question (future oriented) and randomly choose a few runes and then narrow it down to one rune. That rune is used to answer the spectators question. Spend only about 1 minute/spectator. Suggestions/comments?

I do strolling rune readings...
I have a bag of glass oversized runes that I carry, and have interested querents randomly pull one from out of the bag. I then interpret the rune for them. It's a bit like "fortune cookie" readings as I don't go into great depth, but I've found that at most parties, people just want a little mystery, not a full-blown reading. And if they want more, they can always ask for my business card.

If you're not above using a few paddle moves to make the runes appear or change shapes, you might find inspiration in my "Rune Sticks" article in The Wizards' Journal #9. You don't need to use my hokey routine, but the idea might inspire you to come up with something for a strolling runester on the road to rune.

Not sure if Keith Hart still sells them, but a few years ago I got some Rune cubes (dice) from him to do strolling Rune casts, the worked very well indeed.

I like to work them out of a Change Bag, with a single rune mini-reading thrown in...Works well for me in Strolling environments, but I mostly reserve it for BOR...

The Rune Cards by Ralph Blum will work very nicely as well.

So anyone know of any good places to buy some small ultra portable runes? I'm looking to do fun quick cold readings at parties and social gatherings.

I have s small bag with wooden runes from Keith Hart - you should contact him, he's a solid individual and incredibly helpful (in fact you could do worse than buy most of his stuff - there's some really good props and routines to go with them).

I bought mine from a seller on ebay; they're hematite runes, with the rune symbols done in gold. I had a second set made by the same seller that are double sided....I'll leave it to your imagination as to what I can use the two sets for, but I have had, as Borat would say, great success, with them. Very nice!

You can usually find a variety of different sets at your local new-age bookstore. That way, you can check them out for feel before you settle on a purchase.

I would love to see Philemon's rune routine! Do you have a video?

No, I don't have a video, as it probably would be fairly boring for a third-party observer.
For the client, however, it's simply amazing as I describe what's going on in their lives in fantastic detail. Perhaps one day, I'll release a video showing how I do what I do.

Philemon -- I'd love to see you do a few of these too. Do you incorporate any cold reading techniques, or is it a generic prediction (as you suggest a la fortune cookie).
As to acquiring small rune objects, they're fairly easy to make yourself. I've used driftwood and a craft saw to make "rounds" and used a wood burner to engrave the Elder Futhark. Also, consider making yourself a set of three sticks with runes, based on Tenyo's fortune sticks. That method is fairly easy to replicate with the right enamels and sanding. I've done that too, and it combines a thought reading with a prediction. Regards

Not cheap, and I haven't ordered from them, but they have nice sets that might fit your needs.

Any of the large bookstore chains would likely have stone runes and the cards produced by Ralph Blum. Try Barnes and Noble. They've always had them whenever I've looked! Always a wide selection of Tarot cards, too.
