As a high school teacher I feel like I do that on a daily basis. I know that is not what you are referring too, but I think I have a lot in common with the people who do just that for a living.

I'm anti motivational speakers. My ex company hired a guy at a high dollar amount that they wouldn't tell me but the ones that hired this guy were ashamed they paid anything. His thing was he could, during his motivational speach, teach anyone to juggle....right. So everyone, about a thousand of us, are standing there with our balls in our hands (no jokes) and this idiot comes out and starts talking. Most of it was a really bad impersonation of Mohammed Ali, so there we are in the middle of a diverse and fanatically PC crowd with this guy saying "lookie lookie here, I'z gwonna be da champ...ain't be noze-one gwona be stoppin' me mo fo" and then saying "toss one ball in the air and catch it". That was pretty much the entire speach repeated over and over. I will say the people who could juggle before the speach could still juggle, none of the rest of us could. I hate 'em.

I never really understood motivational speakers. I remember we had a couple of them when I was in high school, but being in the working force, that wouldn't do much for me. Hiring an entertainer, and showing the grunts you care about them would do more for me than someone telling me to reach for my potential.

I have nothing against motivational speakers. You see a slot you are qualified for, you may as well fill it. But, honestly....
......to pay someone hundreds or thousands of dollars an hour to tell us, "You can do it"? Once upon a time, we got that from our family, our friends and God. The idea that we need them is a sad statement about the world we live in.

I worked with a lovely woman who after being laid off became a 'speaker' to groups of men on how to find love. She did really, really, well at it. I ran into her and asked what made her an expert at romance and love and she looked me right in the eyes and said "I'm good looking and have a nice voice and those guys will pay anyone they think will help 'em". That speaker stuff is a con me thinks.

The truth, sad to say, is that a bad motivational speaker is like a bad magician. The person who books one will not only regret it later, but will swear on SOMETHING that they'll never hire another one if their life depended on it. It's amazing how many stories I've heard about good magicians losing gigs because of the bad magicians that came before them.
