I've tried to read all threads here, and have loads of sources for moves, (Scott Guinn, Mark Leveridge etc.)
Mark Leveridge seems to be the only person that actively has a REASON for the routine, (a competition between magicians). What other patter/routines do people use with R+R routines - I'm guessing that they could be substantially different depending on whether you used Ring and Rope, or (smaller ring) and string. Bruce |

I use a 6" plastic ring, my routine is "full circle", with "fiber optics", and "acrobatic knot". I got enough moves from other sources that this routine is all mine.

Thanks. Perhaps I wann't clear enough in my question.
Do people bother with a "reason", a story that makes sense - or do you just do the usual "The ring does this, the ring does that..." patter. Mark's text on "The Ring Competition" makes it clear he think you need a good reason for the movements to be happening, I'm just interested in how people perform this type of set, not the set itself. Thanks |

I also haven't come across anything really scripted apart from the Leveridge. I've done it a few times with his script, including the three linked rings at the end, but I'm never totally convinced by it. You can lose the audience while telling the story. Depends on the setting, I guess. Of the performances I've seen the one I like best is Roland Henning's. He doesn't have a reason for doing the moves other than that "it's a classic of magic" but he makes it funny.

I think a beginning, middle, and end to a ring routine is important, without that it is just a bunch of puzzle moves.

The "reason" I give for my Ring & Rope routine is that it's a puzzle. I start by talking about puzzles in general; crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku puzzles, and my personal favorite --- Chinese puzzles: those bits of string and wire that you struggle to take apart and put back together. But, being from Texas, I like to make mine out of BIGGER stuff: railroad spikes, rope, harness rings, stuff like that. Then with each penetration, release, or whatever, I explain that it works just like the Chinese puzzles in the stores --- you just keeping twisting things until all of a sudden they come apart. You can add a little humor by talking about standing in the store, getting the puzzle apart, and then trying to decide if you should keep trying to put it back together, or just put the pieces down and sneak away.

I explain that I took my kids out West and met some cowboys. I go into a rope routine showing how they would catch calfs by the tail, make a bolo (bow) tie, and various horse hitch knots. I then introduce the 4" ring as a saddle hitch ring (and it is) and routine from there.

In my new book Kingdom of the Red, you'll find in Chapter 3, a detailed rope and ring routine called "Comedy Rope and Ring". It uses a 3 inch heavy steel ring and ordinary rope. The entire script is provided and is packed with magic and laughs. 37 sharp b/w photos help teach you the moves. It is also taught in full on the companion DVD. A sample photo from the chapter is on page two of my website. Part of the routine is done solo and part using two volunteers from the audience. It's one of my favorite routines to perform and is great in virtually any venue, even surrounded. Click the link by my signature or my Café banner on the coin or book forums.

Thanks Bruce,
My Printer informed me that the books will be shipped to me on Aug 31. I asked him to split the shipment and send some overnight so I can ship them in the first week of September. You'll love Comedy Rope and Ring. Larry |

I am thinking you could do a "do as I do" routine like Whit Haydn's Chinese linking rings.
