This is an effect I've been producing, let me know what you think.

Looks really good, only the movie has been shot from a wrong angle ... or is that done on purpose to hide the method

But I feel a cut on that area would have cost blood bleeding from the arm and not just one line of red blood w/o dripping downwards.
Unless it's a very very light cut but where's the Magic of that then? |

Harm: It is shot from the front - because most specs will be in front of you. The effect itself is angle proof.
Ed Mauve: That is a good point for the sake of being anatomically correct; however, I haven't had many lay people point that out. I assume that it's overlooked due to the speed of the effect (supposing that the blood needs time to begin dripping). You will enjoy the new version (Omega Hearts) a bit more then. It uses a completely different gimmick, and will triple the blood volume (lots of dripping).

Top Hat off to you for creating something and posting it. However, it did look a bit like you'd squirted a ketchup packet along your arm. I found it really hard to tell from the video whether this any good I'm afraid.

Thanks for sharing the clips, its very nice, Cheers. |

I'm not fond of the scar ending. From the spectators view your arm should be completely covered in scars by now and in need of plastic surgery.

Huh. . . Not sure about the ketchup packet comment. It's not ketchup, the card is shown front back and such before anything else happens, and my hands are also shown empty. If you know how to hide a ketchup packet under those conditions, then bravo. Ed Mauve No, I understand. Being so close to a major artery, more blood would make more sense. That's just beyond the limits of the current gimmick. I'll be sure to PM you a video of the Omega version. dough 1: Spectators don't think things like that through (like I mentioned with the blood dripping thing before). The stun of what just happened combined with the lack of time to think about it prevents them from questioning it. 2: For all they know it's the first time you've done it anyway (especially if you tell them that). 3: If you'd like to cover youself in scars then, the gimmick is perfectly capable of accomodating you. It is a good effect, I would use it as a way of predicting the card that is chosen.
have the blood flow into a pattern of the five of hearts etc. then heal it into the scare, would make a great routine and one that is not done to fast to appreciate the over effect. let me know how much it is and when you get the new version in. Michael |

Wardini With respect the card is shown front and back and the hands shown empty then the camera cuts to some text then cuts back to the card on the arm. How dow I know what happens inbetween? The ketchup comment was maybe fatuous but what I was trying to say was from the video I see a red blur appear. How realistic it is I can't tell. Also I don't see the point of this. Cards don't normally cut people, what is the justification for the effect. I think it needs to be placed into some form of context of a routine for the demo. I would also rather see the whole effect from end to end as a routine rather than all the scence cutting. |

Dbaker, now that you have explained it I think its probably the greatest effect ever, as soon as I can find a stupid audience I'll give you a call.

Michael: I designed an after-effect that reveals the name of a selected card in a blood stain on the arm (sort of like ashed on arm). You could also spell the name in scars.
The new version won't be released until October. Wardini: A valid point, but just so you know, it was filmed as a continuous shot (it was just too long to display as a demo). I cut it up to make it fit into a 2 minute restraint. I'll see if I can make a more continuous version of the tape. Again fair point. The blood is very realistic (I tried many brands before deciding on this one). It is "Bottle of Blood" brand if you want to check it out at your local costume store. The patter and reason for the effect (and specific use of playing card) are explained in the manual. These where purposely left out. dough: Okay. You won't need to look far, so I'll be awaiting your call.

Dbaker_creator - I can understand leaving the patter out as you don't want to give away the whole effect. I think the bloodied card name on the arm would also add some context to the cutting of the arm with the card. I appreciate that it's personal style but I would prefer to see the card selected, shown then used to cut arm in one sequence. It's a sad state of affairs but with the antics of recent tv magicians and the suspect videos of ceratin magic purveyors I tend to be sceptical of anything that has been cut.

It's not a terribly deceptive effect currently, although perhaps it could be with new blocking.
The blocking should expose more of your arm, hands, and the playing card while doing the dirty work. Currently it's obvious that you're doing 'something' behind the right arm, which masks the ENTIRE effect until it's over. If you can't open up your actions, the effect will not get stronger. It's a good enough effect that it deserves as much work as you can put into it to make it stronger. I hope you can find a handling that opens up the action and removes the thought that 'dirty work' is happening behind the right hand and arm. We need to see the trail of blood develop behind the card AS it's moving along your arm. |

Silverking, please read the previous posts before commenting.
As I have already explained, the shot is done from the front simply becuase most spectators will view it from the front, the effect itself is completely angle proof. As I mentioned, I am re-doing the video to give a better picture of the cutting motion.

Here's a tip, don't ask folks what they think if you're not interested in their opinions.
There's no need to be defensive, as much as it's a natural reaction. I read the ENTIRE thread prior to posting, and your effect as shown plays very weak, which was my point. To be factual, you didn't say you were making a new video, you said this: "I'll see if I can make a more continuous version of the tape", which is actually very different from committing to make a new video with the effect more exposed as it was happening. Defensive doesn't make your effect any stronger, and saying it's angle proof is very different from showing folks it's angle proof. Onward and upward, with no need to be defensive when folks are being honest with you about what they see. |

There is also no need to be malicious when you are corrected, and splitting hairs over "I'll make a new video" and "I'll make a more continuous video" (which by default would require the video to be new anyway) is just a display of pride, arrogance, and ignorance.
