Again, I want to say thank you for all the helpful advice. I think last night went well. I managed to stay out of the server's way and got some great audience reactions. Probably due to the years I have been in sales, but I even did good reading the tables--only had one to say they didn't want to see any magic. Now just keep your fingers crossed that it becomes a permanent gig. Thanks again.

Congrats Steve! You worked hard for this chance, so make the most of it. A bit if advice though...
Even if you don't get the gig, ask the GM if they would still be willing to sign a letter of recommendation based on that one night. 9 time outta 10, they will have no problem signing it. Good luck! Steve |

I agree with Steve. That letter of recommendation can be priceless and very useful.

Just a quick update.... the GM called me today and offered me Friday nights(1 hour) and Sunday afternoons(also 1 hour). I am thrilled to get the gig, but think it's kinda strange that its only 1 hour each day. Any of you guys have such short times? Maybe it will change after a couple of weeks. Again, thanks to all of you for all of your help.

In my experience, both personal and talking to others, 2 to 3 hours is the norm, and you charge for that block of time, not per hour (that way they can't send you home early if things are slow).
Having multiple nights at the same restaurant is a tough situation. While it is more money and more potential clients, there is an underlying problem. If that restaurant decides to discontinue your services, you lose two nights. If you're only looking at having the one restaurant for some extra money, that might not be an issue, but it is something to think about. Josh |
