Arthur Coghlan, Australia's premier escape artist, will be at the Cannon's convention this year. He will be performing his most famous and mystifying escape from a steel drum. The drum and sundry equipment has been built in the US, and Arthur will not even see it before his escape attempt.
In 1980, Arthur performed this escape for the first time on live national television. Once Arthur was locked inside the drum, the drum was placed into a large wooden box and lifted by a crane to 100 feet. A weighted rope, 100 feet long, was attached to the hinged base of the box and, at the full height, the rope pulled tight and released the drum, which fell to the ground below. Arthur had escaped the fall, but the crushed drum showed what could have happened if he failed. Back then he built the escape and submitted it to the TV station, who in turn had engineers take it to their college for a week long examination. One engineer even tried to have the TV show stop the escape, as he couldn't see that anyone could escape. Australian TV are going with Arthur and will be airing it back home for all the Aussies to see. Can he do it again? Don't miss going to Cannon's escape convention this year to see a master at work. This does sound quite interesting. Too bad I'm not going to be there.

Can't wait! I hope to book my flight next week! Ian, will you be gracing us with your presence this year?
Margarette
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

Yeah, Ian, are you gonna be there?
Margarette, maybe if you say "pretty please", he'll come. |

Hi, I won't be there this year, sorry to say. I have been following Arthur's career for 27 years and, as a locksmith apprentice, I went to the TV studio to examine one of his other escapes. Since then I have been waiting and hoping that I would get to see the escape, and the very year he is going to perform it, I won't be there to see it. I'll have to catch it on the TV (again).
It will blow your mind. Between this escape and Mark Cannon's aerial safe escape (again, which I have not seen live) and some great lectures on offer, this is the convention to be at. No point posting here to say you aren't going. Get off the computer and do something so you can go. Ian
