Interesting note. My friend tried in advertising to claim to be the area's premiere magician. He hoped that this tactic would stop the $50 birthday calls and tire kickers. It did not. OK...new thread started here from the previous thread. I find that most of us are guilty of trying to sell their act as their area's PREMIER act. So how can one city have 10 PREMIER magic acts? It's impossible. So what makes your act better than mine? Or what makes my act better than yours? It's all about public perception, which is why most of us do this. I, however, do not use this tactic on my website. For one thing, I perform all over the country. Advertising that I'm the premier magi in my area almost limits me to Dallas/Ft. Worth. So by advertising this way, I'm shooting myself in the foot. The best way to get rid of the $50 birthday party shows is to simply advertise that you don't do them. Have walk-away power and your clients will have respect for you, and you will have better respect for yourself. What works well for me on my website is I just come right out and say that if you're looking for the cheapest act you can find, then you should go somewhere else. I am NOT the cheapest act in town...however, I'm not the most expensive either. My fees are a direct reflection of the quality service that I provide for each and everyone that hires me. You can be assured that my fees are a fantastic value when you take into consideration the entire experience that is created for your event. Do I still get the people calling wanting something for nothing? Sure...but maybe one or two calls per month, and I usually tell them to go to one of the local party agencies in town where they have clowns and so forth that can perform on a small budget.

Oddly enough WHERE AND WHEN you are finding work, will dictate exactly what type of work you book from it. I worked in comedy clubs and restaurants and resorts and such for 20 year. I don't get a lot, maybe 3 people a year inquire about kids shows from the restaurant. This is because of the way I work and the restaurant. We did not cater to kids, heck we only had 4 kids menus anyhow! So that will stop it.
I don't do advertising in Yellow Pages, or on the web, where people "tend" to look for things like kids parties. So that nets me 0 calls. People who have seen me know what it is I do. It is not an issue. I had an idea originally to just price myself WAY out of range so nobody would even think of saying yes. It backfired when I moved to Key Largo. There was NOT a price I found that would dissuade these people from their goal. I figured though if you are going to be stuck doing something you really don't like such as magic for a demographic you are not good at, then it may as well compensate you huge. As for "why is my act better than yours?", well who says it is? Who cares either way? It is not a relevant comparison. Does one making more money make it a better act? The reason I get such loyalty out of people is what I sell. Not hypnosis shows, not magic, but a "peace of mind" that when I am engaged to do something I will not only provide the show they are paying for, but they will get more than their money worth. They know they don't have to worry about me showing up, being drunk, being rude, not doing a good show and so many of the hundreds of other things people have had happen to them. The people I deal with have a LOT to do and if they are hiring a magician, or hypnotist, then it is just one more thing for them to do. So if they can not worry about it once the call is made, then life goes on as usual. THAT to them is worth any price tag you want to put on it. They know that everyone will be happy, they know there will be no problems and they will look good. That is priceless.
