For a monte using gimmicked cards, it can't be beat. I perform it every chance I get. You can devise your own patter, but don't turn it into a challenge between you and the spectators.

IMO, the best monte is to learn to throw the cards for real. Second to that, get Ultimate 3 Card Monte. It's top notch!

I must second what Brent has just posted. For a Gimmicked fooler Skinner’s Ultimate three card Monte is hard to top. However, the “real” Monte moves are not difficult to learn at all. Learn the “Hype” or toss-move and you can perform the Three Card Monte with a borrowed deck of cards.
I recommend Daryl’s Video/DVD titled, interestingly enough, “Daryl does the Full Monte”. There is more than you will ever use on this teaching tool. Yes Skinner’s is good. I just think that you owe it to your self to learn the real working!

I've been practicing the 3 card monte by Daryl. Following his advice I used blue back bees.....
LOL, and guess what, I had a friend who somehow recognised the back of the cards.. .and could tell me the key card without even looking!! Man That sucked.... Anyway, that was quite sideline... I think I need some tips for my move, the hype. Some people can tell when I do it.... I wonder where I am going wrong.... perhaps someone can PM me some tips? |

I have the Ultimate 3 card monte, but prefer the "Color Monte" by Emmerson & West. the efect is similar, but the cards are not gimicked and the colored cards(not playing cards) give a good excuse to pull some cards out of your jacket. I like it because you end perfectly clean.
I plan on learning the ungaffed 3 card monte because as a beginner, I find it much, much easier to perform with ungaffed effects as I often perform for friends who know me and aren't inhibited to examine my props.

I have the color monte too.... but personally I wasn't too impressed with it. I do agree that it is rather creative in its own way. But I think the actual ungaffed monte is better.
For the color monte, once you learn how its done, you can actually use any normal cards to perform. But in my opinion, it appears to have lesson audience participation. |

I think that Skinners Ultimate Monte is the BEST gimmick three card monte out there. With that said, I would learn the ungimmicked routines too. Its nice to be able to do both, and its REALLY nice to be able to show ungaffed cards afterwards without having to "switch".
Have fun learning! |

The only problem I have with skinner's monte is that it wears out at the same rate as other bikes, and needs to be replaced often, though at 10 dollars or so for it, it isn't a big deal.(you cant make the Gaff yourself)
but it is a REALLY cool monte and by far one of my favorite "packet" tricks. Be sure to pull the cards out of a regular deck, it won't arise any suspiction And you could always, at the end, put the 2 on the table, the 3 in one pocket and the ace in the other, ask where the ace is, and then you reveal they switched, into ungaffed cards! |

After reading the posts above, I realize I have to learn the clean way to do the 3 Card Monte! Mr. Murphy, Thanks for recommending the video/DVD, “Daryl does the Full Monte”.
I like to use both gaffed and clean versions for some illusions, often using the clean version first, then having the props examined, and finally finishing with the gaffed version. Using a different handling makes an illusion seem even more amazing, since it seems you can do it anyway you feel like. The "Ultimate 3 card Monte" seems ideal for this type of presentation.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

Ok, what you have to remember is that Three Card Monte was invented by CROOKS using simple and normal cards. The way they made their money was by making the person bring their own deck and do it, using that, which is what I do. With practice it becomes second nature. So my advice is, just learn to do it with a normal deck, it's a better effect!!!
P.S. Come to the point most magic effects were invented by crooks. kas |
