What, current , in print book would you recommend for someone wanting a good Tarbell course-esque) overview of rope magic? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the magic Café. The biggest referance book is the Stewart James encyclopedia of rope magic book.

Ya know, I was LOOKING for that, but was having a hard time finding it. Is it still in print?

Originally the Stewart James' Encyclopedia of Rope Magic was in three volumes. It has been reprinted as one hardbound volume.
Note that the softbound edition by Dover is NOT the same. It consists only of volume one of the original three-volume set. The new edition which is three volumes in one is advertised as "newly expanded and revised" but I suspect much has been left out. I had the 3-vol. edition but sold it when I got wind of the new edition. I wish I had kept it. Still, it is a wonderful source. If cost is a factor there is always the Dover Paperback. Andy

Does it mean the original 3-volumes or one hardbound volume are hard to get now? Does it also mean those that are sold now are incomplete?
Thanks for clarifying as I do not wish to buy the incomplete publication. |

James,
The original three-volume set is no longer available. The new edition is in one volume and it is readily available from dealers, and sells for about $50. (I hope I didn't confuse you...it's the Dover Paperback edition that sells for under $10 that is comprised only of material from volume 1 of the original set of three). Here is one source for the new edition: http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/product.php?productid=7879 Andy

A Tarbell course-esque book providing an overview of rope magic?
How about...hmmmm...Tarbell? Tarbell certainly has a lot on rope magic (it was Dr. Tarbell's specialty, after all). I do agree with the suggestion of Stewart Jame's book, but don't be surprised if much of what's in it (at least the 1st volume) is also in Tarbell. Karl Fulve's book is also pretty good. Most of the modern stuff I'm afraid is easier to find on video. -Rob |
