Over the past year I have really got into rope magic and I love learning it, practicing it and the audience reaction is great due to it being quite simple to follow. I feel. I know a basic ring on rope routine, Professors nightmare, Fiber optics and a few other bits and bobs which is quite a bit.
I have a good source of material to learn from, including Encyclopaedia of Rope Magic, by Stewart James. I have the first part of Daryl’s expert rope magic and the rest soon to follow at some point. So my question is: I would like to find and look at routines that just involve rope and a few other props. The reason is I would like to be able to do a continuous busking routine with no end and no beginning and I can move through effects that the viewers like at the time. I don’t want to use gaffed ropes and no magnets. However extra props like ring, scissors, cups and silks are cool and anything that won’t be to bulky. Sorry I can't be more to the point on what I want but I hope you can help. I have found some great stuff from searching previous posts but I just want to put this out there. cheers.

If I'm not mistaken, Tabary's basic routine, found in his book, only uses rope without any additional gimmicks. But I hope somebody else can confirm this since I've never found the time to study the book (I know, bad Bill, bad Bill).
But I know for certain that Daryl's rope routine uses only rope. The ropes are handed out during and after the routine, and there's nothing to see. To reset, all you have to do is tie up the rope in a particular way -- but with a bit of routining work on your own, you won't even need that for a reset. His routine can be found on the third and final volume of his rope magic DVD series (along with a lot of other types of rope work and an extra routine or two that use very little else but rope). Good luck in your search, Bill |

The George Sands DVD is full of ideas, go to youtube and look for "full circle" the routine is rather sloppy, but you will get the idea. Roland Henning does some great moves that he got from other sources at the magicvideodepot.com The Karl Fulves rope magic has stuff that Stewart James doesn't have, I like "the vishnu rope mystery". There are three DVD's in the Daryl rope magic set, I like his "acrobatic knot". Dennis Loomis has a great DVD on this subject that is different from the others. That should hold you for some time.

For busking a killer is the one where you tie a handkerchief around your wrists, then take a 25-foot rope and thread between your arms and get a spectator to hold the ends. It seems impossible to get loose, but it is easy and believe me I have seen amazing audience reactions with this.

Al's suggestions are great, but to be more specific, select elements from The Dennis Loomis Knot Routine available from him at loomismagic.com.
Combine the knots you select with your ring and rope routine, add a silk routine (TT?) and you will be traveling light. Maybe add a simple sponge routine to get direct spectator involvement and busk to your hearts content. Andy

Oh guys, thank you so much. I am looking into the stuff you suggest and I am carrying rope around with me. I ve got a feeling I am going to get something together which is going to be cool and once I get the patter in I'll be laughing. So keep the suggestions flowing and any rope jokes are welcome. If you want a prize I am afraid knot, HA HA HA.

I came in third at our local SAM4 stage competition in 2007 with two rope tricks of my own, and Dick Gustofson came in second doing a Tabary routine. Do not underestimate the power of rope magic.

Pete,
So sorry to see your hand in a cast. Are you okay? Hope it doesn't have to be on long. We're glad you can still hit the keys... must be something of a pain. Dennis Loomis
