Does anybody do this?
The cards are obviously custom made. Does it matter? what do you say if people want to look at them. The alien autopsy finale is an incredible picture and it would be great to let them look at one a little closer at the end. Problem is the obvious double face/back(?) element. What do you do? |

Why is the "double face/back element" obvious. If this is an obvious thing in the trick then the trick or the handling may not be very good. I don't know the trick but, you may want to modify the handling so that spectators don't want to see the cards because they are convinced the cards are legit.

I think he meant that it poses an obvious problem (i.e. exposure of the double back/face element) if you hand the cards out for the spectator to 'look at one a little closer at the end.'
I have never given the cards out at the end. I haven't used this in quite a while (there's one move in the handling that I found to be rather awkward, at least for me), so I don't recall the exact configuration of the card faces/backs. If I'm not mistaken, though, the autopsy card is one that you would not want to hand out. Obviously, all cards have two sides and there would be SOMEthing on the back. If the autopsy card had, say, the planet picture on the back, it would probably just be perceived as that being the design that was on the back of all the cards. Theoretically, you could scan the desired images, print them on cardstock, and laminate them. If you made a whole set with autopsy on front and planet on back, you could switch them with one of those little plastic card wallets (the ones that have the extra compartment behind the window) or a z-fold variety. The challenge would be to come up with duplicates that would pass for the originals (i.e., thickness of card, glossy finish, color, etc.). If the cards are made in layers like standard bikes (unfortunately, I'm not sure that they are), you could also buy an extra set and use card splitting techniques to make at least one 'examinable' card. I guess the main point is this... are your spectators ASKING to see the cards? If so, consider altering your presentation. If you just think it would be nice to show them the image more closely... fine. But you can do so without handing them the cards. I think the routine ends with the face-up autopsy card on top of the packet. If not, it should be simple enough to get it there. Just square up the packet and hold it up for the spectator to get a good look at the picture. Then put the cards away and proceed with your next trick.

Jquackc,
the cards in question are made with pictures and the final climax is an actual photo (presumably from a movie...) . For this reason the autopsy picture is very intriguing to audiences. I'll admit I have only shown the effect to family and friends so far so they are not necessarily representative of respectful laymen. That is they want to inspect everything! So far I have been just doing it holding th epicture closer to the audience in my own hand and then move on to the next trick. I like the idea of having an outer space deck. I hope Jim Pace is listening. Or even if there were regular cards with space on one side and aliens (or the autopsy) on the other as packets of four. One could do a twisting the aces effect and then repeat with the autopsy trick (after a switch). There could be many presentation ideas. However the cards made appear to be double sided plastic cards so splitting would be impossible. It is a good routine and is probably fine the way it is. I don't think people presume they are regular cards because of the their unique nature, but that for the most part is not a problem. |

My point is... if the fact that people want to see the gimmick is a big problem for you...then don't do the trick. If this is the Danny Archer trick then I know what it is now... The autopsy card is a gimmick and this may be pretty risky since the most interesting card is the one people can't see. IF this a problem for you don't do the trick.

I've performed this, and never had anybody want to examine the cards....

As they are commenting on this or shocked, drop the cards in your pocket and move to another group or bring out something else to perform. I used it on and off since its release (its not for every audience) and was not a huge fan of the card displacement after every count, but its a good packet effect reaction wise. It's really just another version of Sam Schwartz's classic packet effect Backflip. Paul. |

It's hard to find "Something new under the sun" as far as effects. (Not that they do not exist, but they are pretty conspicuous when you do run across one.)
But most effects are variations on something that has all-ready been done. However we LOVE those new twists and we gladly plunk down our cash to get 'em! "The latest and the greatest."

"Alien Autopsy" is a rip-off of Sam Schwartz's trick, "Back Flip." Nowhere in the instructions do Pace or Dobson reveal this, so they are beneath contempt. Yes, the cards are well made and interesting, but if you want a really good trick, buy "Back Flip."
