So, I decided to spend the $2 and include this manuscript in my latest order from Abbott's after mulling over the description for a while. I am quite pleased with this little bit o' business and plan to use it in my preschool programs. Subtitled "A Burlesque by George Tollerton" this seems to be an Abbott's exclusive that was first published in 1935. Unline many comedy bits from the 1930's or thereabouts, it still retains all of its comedy and appropriateness and my only change for the preschool crowd would be to not include one small joke about flea reproduction that otherwise would be fine and funny for anyone older.
Certainly worth the $2, and it will likely pay for itself many times over as I use it in my shows. Gotta love these older manuscripts! Posted: Sep 25, 2007 8:07pm Update - I performed this today at one of my preschools and got plenty of laughs, just like the manuscript promised. The children giggled the whole time and the teachers burst out laughing at the punch line, which is all you could ask for; something for all ages. |

It was a George Tolerton book that I learned to do ventrloquism from.
That, too, from memory, was only a small booklet, but taught me all I wanted to know - way back in the 70's!! Best, Dave

So, I've been performing this bit for nearly a month, and the reaction is great, just used it at a hospital festival yesterday. It plays well with adults and toddlers alike, and there are some two-year-olds who ask me "Where's Henry?" and "Where's Bertha?" as soon as they see me. I showed my two-and-a-half-year-old nephew this yesterday, and I made a mini sponge pickle rise (well, Henry did the lifting) and when Gabe saw the pickle rise and float, he looked under very carefully under it as it floated and asked me, "How you do that?" which goes to show you two year olds understand that things aren't supposed to float by themselves.
Anyway, these Performing Fleas are the breakout hit of the season, edging out Duke's Dye Version, and pretty much up there with the Wonder Mouse. Just got the "Famous Flea Act" by Tom Palmer (Tony Andruzzi) as well and that pamphlet consists of a script and brief but surprisingly comprehensive instructions for building a very economical yet stage-quality Flea Circus. |
