Hi everyone,
When I watch magicians sometimes they wear so many similar clothes. Most of the dove worker wears tails. I know they need to wear because of the technique. But for manipulation acts its hard to find a good costume. Forexample I'm working on a manipualtion act which includes roses and billard balls. How can I find a good costume for myself? I love Jay Scott Berry's style but I don't want to copy him. Can anyone give an advice? magicially yours, Nedim Guzel |

Just go with your personal style.
If you like JSB clothes then maybe do something like that. Just don't do his exact costume. Hope this helps. Best Brandon

Thanks a lot but I think you can understand me. It's hard to find your costume.

A simple, commonly used, easily adaptable idea is simply men's slacks and a matching turtle neck. You may, of course pick the color to suit your act. One piece of advice from experience doing manipulation...Keep it simple. You do not want your costume overpowering your props. Same for illusions...Big tricks, big costume...You get the idea.
Hope this helps! Brian |

Believe me,
I know how hard it is to be original and find and outfit you like for your routine. Maybe we could help you a little more if you told us what type of manip. you are doing. If its cards, coins, thimbles, candles, billiard balls, or whatever. Best Brandon

Hi,
Thank you for your advices. My act includes billard balls, roses and very little wine glass production. I nearly build my act. But I have problems with my costume. magicially yours, Nedim Guzel |

In my opinion, you should wear a suit.
That just sounds like a tuxedo routine. But that's just my opinion. Maybe you should also base the costume around steals for the routine if that is even a issue. Hope this helps. Best Brandon

I don't know what kind of style you are looking for, but it sounds very Victorian to me. I wear a Tails coat, with a black shirt, and white vest and cravat. I also wear a top hat for part of my act. I like the old look.
You can find tails in lots of colors if you look for them, you could also try a brightly colored shirt or tie. Hope you find your style! TGD

Thanks alot,
I work with tails for years when I'm performing dove magic. But I want to change. Because for my opinion it so old fashioned. When you wear tails people always think you will steal something. My new act will be romantic and slow. Not very modern. But as I said its hard to find a good costume for it. magicially yours, Nedim Guzel |

Hmm...when I read your post my immediate thoughts were Black and Red. Black shirt, pants, and maybe a jacket...and a red tie (neck or bow). Also, if you were to wear a jacket a red pocket squire is a must.
Just my thoughts on what I would wear, Hope it helped in some way. Danton

Its a good idea. The costume you told might be good for a manipulation act which is romantic. I know my style and I will find it.
I have a good black jacket. But for inside do you suggest white shirt or black? magicially yours, Nedim Guzel |

It depends on what else you wear with it. If you also wear red, a black shirt would look super. With a different color white might be better. Are you going to wear a tie? If so, what kind and what color? This will help with choosing black or white for your shirt.
When you find the right outfit, post a picture! Danton

I don't know how it looks when I wear a tie on stage. Do you think it will be good?

I am guessing that you are the one in the red shirt in your avatar (is that Jeff McBride you're standing next to?),
so I would say it depends on what else you wear with it, and the style of tie its self. Probably just a regular neck tie would be just fine. I have worn many a bow tie in acts, and just lately decided to wear a cravat (18th century look). The other way to decide is to wear a tie and see. You never really know how something will look until you try it. If you are planning on buying anything for you costume, I would suggest you go to a store that was it all (or most of it anyway), and try it all on and see. Having not seen you, I can really help anymore then suggesting you try it and see. If you still aren't sure, PM me, and I'll try to help in any other way I can. All the best, The Great Danton P.S. You might want to look into a vest if you hadn't already thought of that. To me, vests make the whole outfit look smooth and clean. =]

I think basically dress smart. Make sure your costume is tailored to fit. This sounds silly, but if you watch most young people, their clothes hang on them like they are wearing their father’s clothes. There is a dove worker in Vegas that wears the most horrible outfit. He wears some sort of tails with jeans. The jacket doesn’t fit and it looks stupid. Granted, he is fitting with today’s style, but you are a performer. Be a trend setter.
Robert-Houdin set the trend for tuxedo’s, but he never wore one. He wore what was considered formal at the time. This trend continued with his predecessors. That’s why the tails is so common. You don’t have to wear top and tails to look sharp. I have seen a new trend which is kind of slick is the Zoot Suit. You can work that into a dove act. But, go with works with your style. I mean, style of your character. Remember, Houdini’s offstage style of dress did not match his onstage style of dress. He was reported to wear clothes that looked like he slept in them (he probably did). His onstage dress was neatly pressed afternoon and evening tails. This is the image we think of when we think of Houdini. And that’s eighty years after his death! How do you want audiences to remember you? |

Great advice mtpascoe. I wish more young performers would follow it.

I agree this is a great advice for me. Thank you. I know the Zoot Suit and I made my costume like a Zoot Costume for my manipulation act. I understand what you mean.
Thank you again. magicially yours, Nedim Guzel |
