Hello!
To gaddy - I have had past clients with Churches so getting 2 out of 78 was not that hard - I actually have 6 now, with 3 being new clients. And as for selling the marketing secrets - sorry, I bought them from others so I don't have anything to sell! LOL To JohnHinton - yes, that is good info to know. Again, I still say the name thing is more important that what some of you say. As Payne just mentioned there are not many magicians who use their "real" name. Perhaps not using a 'obvious' fake name and normal sounding name is what we were after? Again, though - what if my name was Jesus? Or heaven forbid - Payne? Marketing is important and I go by my last name as is - so naming the show was a good idea and stay with my own name. But I could have called myself "Bob Smith" to separate the two identities....some magicians have done that - gone by two different names and dress totally different even for repeat customers who have no idea it is the same person. One Christmas a fellow performer lost a customer as he had done the show for 3 years in a row and they wanted a change - they loved him, but wanted to go with someone else and someone cheaper as his price had gone up. He suggested a 'fellow' performer and gave the website. Yep - it was him, different name, lower price and different costume and show. They hired 'him' and to this day had no idea! In the end - a name means a LOT I think - and perhaps some of the people here ONLY do Gospel magic and then I understand. But I might not want to hire Boo Boo Bishop for my kids party if I am not a Christian so to speak - so I would have a different name for the regular crowd - it works both ways in my opinion. Cheers! Ah - perhaps we have hit the nail on the proverbial head here!
I am not a minister and not in the Ministry so to speak. I am a Christian and have a show with religious themes and use tricks sold my many of the Gospel magicians - I basically do Sunday Schools, Church Camps, Picnics, Festivals held by the church etc... I do not perform for the congregation and preach the word - I use it subtlety in my act and use the patter to get the kids excited about the gospel and bible. I get a lot of calls for this work over the years and I wanted to fine tune the act and actually advertise it as a 'Gospel Act' so the church would see there is someone who is 'specific' to this field - not a magic show for everyone - like some magicians are close up, some adult, etc. Yes, I would still do adult, still do close up , but create a new website and new name for this show - I would not advertise my other self or try to get corporate work etc out of it - this would be like a separate entity in my business itself. Like how Pepsi owns 7up. Sorry if it was confusing at all!! and in the end I am thankful for all the help and opinions. Norden |

What I do for my regular shows is seperated from my Church work. I have 2 different sites, one to promote my ministry side, and one to promote my entertainment side. I do not reference one with the other.

Yep - and that was what I was looking for - a name that seperates me from my regular shows - with a new site etc....just doing it the other way around from what you just said...so in the end you are saying you agree it needs to be different? Do you use a name that is different from the shows - I would assume with the Bishop name that a different name is used for little Timmy's birthday party then? I am just really confused now....

I just use DC for my gospel shows, and the name of the show is "Jesus is no illusion". I just take the "magic" off. Are you doing large stage illusions or small object lessons? If your audience is under 100, just use your name, if you are doing an entire production, try your initials. I'm not that creative though! Also, I do venues where I may do a secular show for two days and then a gospel show. If I use "Magic DC" for the two secular shows then "DC" for the gospel show, people will remember "DC" either way. Hope this helps!

For my secular shows I go by Terry Michael Owens...for my Church work...Just Terry. I am an Ordained Bishop, so I don't want to loose that in making up a name for my church programs. As I said before, I name the ministry...

Frankly all the "Amazing...", "..ini", "Incredible..." "Gospel..." is getting too well used. Why not just use your name??

I got my nickname, "Gospel Dan" years before I started performing Gospel Magic. It was originally given to me when I was working for the Calgary Mustard Seed. The clients began calling me that because I used to always carry a pocket size New Testament around with me everywhere I went. I was also famous for always using quotes from the Bible. When I became a Youth Pastor, one of my students out of the blue called me "Gospel Dan". I asked him where he heard that, and he replied that he just thought about calling me it, and that he had never heard it before. I gleefully explained to him how clients at the Mustard Seed used to call me that. He asked if it was alright if he called me Gospel Dan, and I was tickled by it. The nickname spread throughout my youth ministries, and when I began performing Gospel Magic, the name just stuck as a good name to use.
I never really put any real thought into a stage name, but I guess in a sense, "Gospel Dan" would be considered my stage name. If someone wants to use or not use a stage name is in my opinion a personal choice. Of course what we do isn't about us, but about God. However, what we do as entertainers puts the focus on us, and then it's our job to point everyone to the focus of our lives(God). A focus we need to always be aware of when being examples of God's children. It's not wrong to take a bow when a job is well done, and it's okay to receive praise for your efforts and talents. It's not alright though to let it get to your head so your head becomes too big for the rest of your body. Yes, we are all witnessess and ministers of God's love, but we are also entertainers. We have not only the privelige and honor to be able to entertain people, but we also have the opportunity to use it to tell other people about our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ!
