Okay. For those of you keeping score, it was a little surreal last time. This is now hyper, ultra, uber surreal. The disparity between the commercial western clown festival with Liuzhou's gorgeous aged natural setting has been replaced with a commercial western venture in a city that is being built from the ground up to resemble a Bavarian version of Paris. No joke. It's like Celebration, Florida, but there's nobody here! It's not done yet, so only a handful of folks inhabit the quarter mile of condo towers.
We're still waiting on two plane-ful of clowns (as per schedule) so I only took a few pics of the hotel and the park in which we'll be performing. I stuck it up on youtube. Here 'tis. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jxu-BwNi_40 |

I've just put up a video of some stuff from Day Two here in Tiandu City, it is still processing, so just go to:
http://www.youtube.com/circusbambouk and you'll be able to see it as soon as possible. Today we are all gathered (well, almost all. Kirk Marsh, Kevin Kraft and possibly some others have a late arrival). Day two was about the official park tour, meeting our emcees and stage managers and tech folks. Unlike the last festival, our emcees are students instead of professional performers. Their English, however is very strong. And they were clearly hired for their looks, both male and female. Stage Managers also students, English is good. On our stage, the Rose Garden, we have Flora and YoYo. Good senses of humor, which is nice. The 'tech director' for our stage...well, she's getting there. We do not have pro technicians, and there are ALOT of things one takes for granted. For example, if you fade the music out on the mixer, they don't understand why you need to stop the CD. "The music is already gone!" A couple run throughs of each show, she started to catch on. We had a semi-formal dinner last night, hosted by the government folks. Many, many lengthy speeches. For Kevin and anyone else who knows these folks: It was Jim Ahearne's b-day. His speech was surreal: A festival is like a ship. If there is nobody on it, it just floats. The metaphor extended from there. Dick Monday, having been asked to give a speech as the Director of Lingling Clown Harvard as he was walking into dinner, KILLED with the simple metatheatricality of translating his translator's translation...it's kind of like when you have two mirrors facing eachother and it goes on forever...hard to describe. He killed. Pat Cashin and Greg Desanto collaborated to get Jim a pie in the face for his birthday. Then I went to sleep, so I can't tell you what happened after that. Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone are getting married later in the week; David Engel is officiating. Big Bachelorette party for Brenn as well, as she leaves mid-week to get married in NJ, where Keith Nelson of Bindlestiff will be officiating. -Brian |
