Hello guys.
I keep on hearing about scotch and soda being one of the greatest tools of a magician. I was wondering if someone could give me a rundown on what is scotch and soda and what is the best version of scotch and soda. Is it the same as a trick where you got an american coin and copper mexican coin and they merge into one? thanks |

Welcome to the Café! It's a great place with some fantastic info and people.
Scotch and Soda is one of the BEST coin set effects on the market. Get a Johnson Coin set. It's one of the best made. With an S&S, you show 2 coins. An American half dollar and a Mexican Centavo. You point out various differences (size, color, etc...) and have the spectator take them and place one in each hand behind their back. You ask them to hand you the half dollar. You then bet they can't show you the Centavo. They jump on it. When they bring it out, it's changed into another coin! http://www.dennymagic.com/cgi-bin/hazel.......m=002795 Get one. You'll be glad you did. Mark. |

Yep...that's the Scotch and Soda effect. It's a classic! Just remember how much you enjoyed it when you saw it and that's the reaction you'll get from others.
It had to amaze you or you wouldn't be looking for it! The other effect you're talking about is probably the "Hopping Half" set. It's also a stunner. Again, get good (Johnson) sets of each. They cost a little more but are well worth it. http://www.dennymagic.com/cgi-bin/hazel.......m=002791 Mark. |

Its hard to get stuff here in oz.
we only have a dodgy version of scotch and soda and for hopping halves we only have sterling. might have to order from the usa. Now I see books and dvds which use scotch and soda if I were to buy johnson's or if I cannot order overseas a cheap scotch and soda can you perform the same tricks or are there many different types you need. also could you explain all the different coin sets you can buy? ie sun rising etc by johnson I would like to get a heads up on whats good out there. thanks |

Pro, yes S&S is a nice trick but you'd do better spending about $8bucks to buy yourself "Bobo's New Modern Coin Magic." You'll learn a lot of great tricks and sleights with regular coins. Also, though Johnson's is a great brand, the cheaper versions of S&S work the same way and are really good enough. You sound like a beginner. One thing a lot of people do is spend loads of money on trick coins or gaffed-sets, and there are literally a hundred or so that do different things. They are nice but I think you'd get a lot more out of the Bobo's book or dvd set. And actually a Johnson's S&S probably costs about as much as the Bobo's dvd set, which comes with 4 dvds full of tricks, sleights and routines. You just provide the coins. Again, S&S is a wonderful trick as is Hopping Halves. But it's along the lines of "Feeding a man fish, he eats for a day...teach him to fish and he eats forever." Just the same, welcome to the Café... -Mb

I figured he was making a big deal over showing the missing copper coin, but instead the box contained my buddy's watch. |

I ran across my old S&S the other day and matched up a regular centavo and do a little routine that has wow'd a few! Simple but effective! Replace the US quarter with a Canadian Toonie and work something up about NAFTA (I read it somewhere)!

Mine is the best. It is also examinable.
And you can make it for 85 cents. But you have to practice. It looks just like a normal version of scotch and soda, but there are no gaffs.

I do S+S after performing Hopping Halves. I perform it by saying "so you liked that, let me show you how its done. You will notice 1 coin is smaller than the other one so when the small one goes behind the bigger one it looks like it's not there". I then get them to hold out their hand and place them in their palm and get them to close their fist. "now choose a coin" I say and then using magicians choice make one vanish. They think they are learning the secret but really it just baffles them further. I then make the vanished coin appear (seemingly) and then take a bite out of it. It's a nice three phase routine.
Anyone else have any routines using gaffes that they would like to share? REMEMBER... don't spend your S+S!!!
I don't perform illusions... it just looks like I do!

**Correction**
I should have said "gaffs"... "not gaffes" Thanks to Mr Palmer for pointing out the error of my ways.

For a new practioner, or someone who is unsure whether this is the right effect for them, I suggest terying the dime and penny effect. It is a poor man's S&S and can be purchased for as little as $3.50.
