If there are 300 Million variously colored balls and 2% of them are Purple, what are the odds of pulling 4 purple balls out of 10 balls total? To Clarify.....Ten balls are randomly chosen and four are purple. What are the odds of that?
Thanks Dave

This will happen approximately
1 out of 33,333 times. So the odds against it happening are approximately 33,332 to 1. |

Slim, a bit more info that may or may not be useful to you--as long as the Purples are 2% of the total, Stan's answer will hold not just for 300 million but for any large population. (That is, if you had only a million balls, the answer would be the same.)

I see...The percentage is what is important? The 2%.
Thanks Dave

Do you mean "four are purple" or "exactly four are purple"? The way you worded it means "at least four are purple".
I too am very curious about hearing what made you ask this. /Tomas |

Stan's answer is for exactly 4 purple balls out of 10.
I'm guessing the 300 million has something to do with the population of the US Jack
