Hey all, just thought I'd share a photo of my WEAR setup. I'll be doing a crate escape. As we speak, the crate is on display for public examination at the place where I'll be doing the stunt. Hopefully this draws a crowd- we'll see!

Huge wrecking ball....gigantic crane...box getting smashed....it would certainly draw me!
Sounds compelling. Tell us a little on how it all came together, Phil? Best, Tod

I'm particularly interested in how you corraled cooperation from the construction people, and worked out the liability issues.

Thanks for the replies! I came up with this because I had never seen anything like it done before, although I'm sure that someone, somewhere has done something similar. As for the liability issues, I went to Jungle Jim's and said "Here's what I want to do" and given that I've done an escape there before, they said "Let's do it" and it was as simple as that. I wish it was always that easy to secure a good location! As for the setup, I'll be locked in the crate with my arms and legs protruding through holes. Each limb will be shackled with a long chain, and each chain will be held by a strong guy from the crowd. The weight will actually be hanging from a 10 foot high medieval-looking framework. The rope will go up through a mega-heavy duty pulley and be anchored to the ground. When the rope is ignited, I'll have somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 minutes to escape. One cool thing is that even though a cloth will drop and surround the framework to protect the secrat, there is a window cut in the cloth so that the weight is visible the entire time. The audience will actually see it fall.
BTW- as for cooperation from crane operators, I have used the same guy 3 times in the past, twice for USD SJ's and once for a submerged crate. I really lucked out- I called this guy and explained what I wanted, and it turns out he used to play cards with Lance Burton years ago and was totally into it! |
