I have not practiced magic prof. in over 25 years, but now the company I work for expects me to put on a top shelf magic show with Illusions and the works in two weeks. The crazy thing is, I know I can pull it off if I could find the right support. Does anyone rent or lease magic equipment/Illusions, or if I buy magic supplies, I don't know whats good and whats not and would anyone be interested in buying back the brand new magic supplies that were only used one time, at a discounted price. So, to wrap this up, anyone want to tutor an old magician with some new tricks. Has anyone heard of these tricks and are they worth purchasing and performing? Birdcage & the kid Illusion, Fantasma dragon tipover trunk, Worlds fastest trick by Magie, Table lifting set. Sincere thanks.

Use your old tricks, the new ones are garbage.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Two weeks is not enough to train new things.
The best solution would be to refuse the request. Hideo Kato |

I agree. Pass this one up. If you've not really practiced magic in 25 years, there's NOT enough time to do yourself, or the art, right.

You only need one trick, Jim Gerrish's Transfigmigration from his PVC Pipe Book 2. Get up on stage, introduce yourself, and state that as your first effect, you will "put on your costume." Use Transfigmigration to change yourself into a friendly local magician who can dress up and pretend to be you (and who agrees to do this). He puts on a show with his equipment, and at the end, transforms back into you so you can take a bow, and collect the check from your company, which should be TWICE what the other guy charges so you can split it. If they aren't willing to pay for this show, tell them the quickest way to Hades and even provide a roadmap.

Look for a professional who can do it. The amount of money that was offered to you, give it to the professional. Have the professional give you a finders fee for hooking him up.
Maybe you can find one of the members on The Magic Café to be the professional. If not, look in the Yellow Pages or a magic shop. |

Being a magician, perhaps I mislead you. I said that I did not do this prof. for the last 25 years, but as we all know. Once bitten by the magic bug you never stop doing magic. DO YOU? I have always entertained myself and close friends thru the years. How could one not?

With respect to your experience and time in magic, 2 weeks is still too short a time to come up with a good show as your company expect of you.
Let's say you buy or rent those props... by the time the items come to you, how many days left do you have to start working on the act? |

Stick to the ones you know and comfortable with - it's the quality not quantity - and you will do great!

Um ... are you hoping to jump from close-up to stage in two weeks? Is your job in jeopardy if you don't? Is the two weeks two FULL-TIME weeks of rehearsal? How many minutes have you committed to? If you must go ahead with this, hire a director.

I have never done close up per say. I have done small stage magic like metamorphosis,a simple cut in thirds , head cut illusions, dollhouse. Worked with 6 doves and rabbits in every situation. Over the head tissue throw sleights I still work for a good ten minutes and they still never get it.And of course all the good simple stuff like spot card, fresh fish sold here, crystal silk and a zillion others. I'm a person who obviously believes in props and then its all about the presentation. As far as time goes, there is 24 hours in a day and I use every minute of them. What I need from U guys is the name of some good things available out there that will impress people. I live near tannens, but they have never carried dollhouse or similar things only the plans.

Those who rent illusions could not get them to you in time, plus you would find the cost prohibitive. Best bet, ask some of the local magicians, maybe you can con one of them into loaning you something, otherwise get to the Illusions in Mark Wilson's Complete Course in magic, get some cardboard and duct tape and get busy. It's going to be things like Arabian tent and victory cartons, but those still impress audiences. Mark made a lot of illusions out of cardboard, contact paper and duct tape for his TV show, I know a couple of top pros who still have props made out of such (Including Lance Burton), so go that route. Beyond that do you stand up stuff, parlor magic plays on stage, and to some degree with an assistant from the audience you can even do closeup. The over the head tissue is a great bit. A rope trick, what ever you can do. How on earth did you get the idea across to your bosses that you could put together such a show?

I quit preforming in 01. I did continue to learn stuff for my amusement and friends. During this time I continued to do 1 show a year and that was for my wife's classroom. Even doing that, it was difficult to add any new effects unless it was weeks before the show. I could not put together an illusion show and it be polished in only two weeks time. If I were to try this show, I might try to add only one new effect and do the rest of stuff I already knew. If something worked and fooled audiences when you preformed before, they should do the same today.

How long are you expecting the show to be?
2 weeks is enough time to learn about 1 new trick, so I would forget about "The Works." If you want to do this show I would lower the company's expectations gracefully. Offer to do "a trick or two." That will let you do real magic instead of throwing something embarrassing together. And do one of your old tricks. And practice for a live audience a few days before the show. Just my 2 sence |

Um ... glazemagic, surely having worked dollhouse, sub-trunk, x3 cut, doves and rabbits, etc, you know that two weeks is nuts? Sorry, one and a half weeks now ... tick tick tick ...
