You see them advertised along side stipper decks and slick cards in the old catalogs. KC Card, George and Company, probably HC Evans. But what are they? Would anyone care to enlighten me?

A wild guess is that they are short or narrow cards.

Well Vandy you know what we called shake outs, and they were handmade for each person and each order, but I am very interested to hear from anyone who has seen and handled the actual catalog product, and can describe it as to how they came and and which selections they chose for you.

Possibly. Or slick and short cards. I'll post one of the descriptions when I get a chance. Some of the descriptions are the same in different books. But very vague.

From George and Company. (I believe this description is almost identical to the 1960 KC Card catalog description)
Shakeouts We can now supply you with perfect shakeout cards. They can be in any combination on any back design. Please specify. Shakeout Cards per deck $2.75 Six decks $15.00 per Dozen $27.00 Note: A full remittance is required on all stripper orders. So, I'm sure they are stripped somehow, and maybe even have something extra to them. I have some info that sounds logical, but does anyone know for sure? Too bad Slim isn't still around.

Excellent topic Vandy.
"Or slick and short cards" I think the cut is more like I said, so they can go around the table without detection. I can't really imagine a worker using them, but I really would like to know the off the shelf cionfiguration.

I think my favorite item in the KC book is the "Lookout Glass" and the guy sitting there. For some reason it cracks me up when I see it.

YOu think that's it? Trimmed and slick? Ah, I see, the "on any back" reference is the tipoff that the backs are prepped.

Well they are saying any flavor/brand of card, but yes both sides, the inner pack can be hit to cause the shake out pack to slide out then shuffled down to do bottoms or if a fresh cold one, stacked to take the pot. Since they let you select the run of shake out cards they are the same as the ones we discussed. I didn't recall them giving a selection till I read the 1960 book a little while ago. The trim is on the long side and so fine almost not even visible. A worker would feel it in a split second though.

God Bless Slim. He was a giant and a gentle lamb, always there to help. Even when none deserved that quality of expertise, he was still there pushing people forward.

I told ya'll that everything ya'll want is already in the videos, you just got to know what to look for.
Shake Outs The Explanation: Shake Outs is nothing but a Svengali Deck without the roughing fluid. Meaning a card(s) that is cut 1/16th of and inch shorter than the rest of the deck. It is used primarily for games such as the blacks play like Georgia Skin, Tonk or maybe Rummy where the over hand shuffle is used. There are certain groups of people who have been cheated by cheaters using strippers and to avoid being cheated this way again they feel safer if the dealer overhand shuffles the deck. In some games after the deck is walked (separating each card individually around the table) the dealer gather the cards together from the table without the face of the cards being shown and start over hand shuffling. Once the deck is cut and dealt, to the sucker(s) comfort this will nullify the stripping technique and they will not be cheated...at least so they think. There are two types of shakeouts Steve Forte and George Joseph show shakeouts with a shorter deck and the other, which is the opposite (The Shake out) I will show you a friend showing me with a short card. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKNmqmI43RI Clarifying It The Best Way I Can I will explain this ruse with what ya’ll call the Ten Card Poker Deal of which we call it Nine. Take 3 Aces, 3 Kings and 3 Queens and shorten these cards. When the entire deck is held at its end for the overhand shuffle these 9 cards fall out first as the rest of the deck goes on top. As you take the In-Jogged 9 cards and place these back on top of the deck all you have to do now is beat the cut and deal. I don’t need to further explain who will win using this technique. Respectfully Doc P.S. This video will not be up long so…. |

Thanks Doc. That is a very similar principle to the ones we examined here but also different in a couple ways.
Do you know if that is the way they came from the card houses? I'm just curious as to the actual catalog shelf product.
