If a person were to slowly materialize, would his head appear first and then to his feet or would his feet appear first and then upwards to his head?
Which looks more magically and visually pleasing?
the heart is where the magic begins

I think he would slowly appear "all over".
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Hey Frankie, honestly, if ur thinking of developin such an illusion, it'll be awesome...anyways, appearing all over would be cool but feet up is also an option. Looking forward to seeing ur deceptive bases. email pics to me if ur done. cheers!

I think you are not necessarily looking to be artistically pleasing here. The startling appearance would be just the head floating in space- eyes open, perhaps they blink so we know the person is alive and this is not a photo. If possible, the next thing to appear should be the hands- reaching or clutching. Then the rest. My opinion.
In his "Eisenheim's Ghost" Illusion (The Wizards' Journal #13 on my site), Jim Gerrish has been experimenting with flaps that uncover the head first, then the hands, then the rest of the upper body (which is all you get with thie illusion). It makes a much better appearance than having the whole ghost fade in at one time, so I know you are on the right track. Our test audience (Wiz Kids) screamed when the head first appeared by itself, even though they had already seen the illusion performed with the entire upper body (they have all volunteered to be Ghosts on Halloween).

There was an illusion called Biotron in Paul Osbourne's Illusion Systems (Volume 2). It was rather big, but it involved a wireframe morphing into a real human. You could adapt it to a frame or a smaller box for only one transformation.

Girl to Gorilla method could be used to cause a person to slowly fade in.

In a lecture, Don Drake once mentioned working on an interesting method of making someone materialize or dematerialize on stage. I don't know if he ever tried it, but it was a very unique princible.

The Blue Room concept could also be a method for this, but the slow materialization may be from side to side rather than head to toe.

Theoretically you could do Blue Room head first or feet first..
I've seen standing versions that use Blue Room..

Didn't they go from the middle toward the head and feet simultaneously on Star Trek?
That always looked cool IMHO, plus if performed this way as an illusion - it would eliminate a spectator thinking that the person came from the base or the top of the illusion... Lyndel |

Harbin had the "Invisible Man" in his book, and I know Wellington has produced versions of it. A total fade-in is cool, but from the feet up is the way to go IMHO. Depending on how slow the appearance, it would add to the suspense, the audience not knowing who was about to "appear". Osborne also has plans for this illusion, I believe.
