Hi Everyone
I'm new here, but have spent a little time reading the forums and like what I see. I'm a full time working magician and love all things magical, from history to performance. I approach magic from an actors perspective (my training) and am also a writer. I live on the North Yorkshire coast in the seaside town of Scarborough. I have a beautiful wife Raine and three beautiful children. In my free time I enjoy songwriting. I look forward to meeting you. In performance I enjoy classical magic, close up, illusions and so much more. Cheers Phil |

Hi J.R.
Thanks for the welcome. Good quote, wasn't it from Robert Houdin? I seem to remember reading it in one of the Tarbell books. I agree with you I think of all my magic as coming from a character and not simply me showing skills learned. Cheers Phil |

That's correct, I've seen it in a lot of magic texts, most recently while watching and reading Michael Ammar's Complete Cups and Balls. He then goes on to quote someone else: "If Hollywood is casting for the part of a magician, an actor would play the part better than a magician." ...Or something like that. I'm wishing more and more that would have taken more theater courses in college.

Philip,
It is always good to hear of a magician with acting training. After performing magic part-time for many years while growing up (from about age 10 to 18), I began studying theatre and acting in college and enjoyed it immensely. As a matter-of-fact, magic took somewhat of a back "burner", as the saying goes, and I found myself getting roles in several stage shows, sometimes playing a leading or THE leading character. I have been in a public speaking sort-of arena most all of my life, to include being a christian minister and pastor of a church (I no longer pastor a church, but it was a tremendous experience)! I also love to write, and have published some 37 articles on a personal blog about some of my experiences over the last 16 years. I believe all of my experiences have formed my "character" and that I can relate well to people. Magic is a way of connecting with them, not just a way of impressing people with things that you know how to do, but they don't. It's not really about fooling people, it is about relationship and stirring up things in people's hearts and minds. Magic techniques and tricks alone cannot do that. There has to be MORE.

Welcome to the Café and enjoy. It truley is a wonderful thing to have a backround in the theater. Not only does it provide a great help to your presentation of magic, but it is a good experience by itself.

Hi CurtWaltermire
Thank you for the welcome. All that you've described is fantastic grounding for any kind of performance, just my opinion, but there it is. Without acting ability you'd have to have amazing effects, where as with the ability you are able to make the most simple childs trick appear to work wonders. Writing is a good disipline I'm a writer and have had a little success with it. Once again its a pleasure meeting you. Cheers Phil |

Hi magicalmike
Thanks for the welcome. Yes theatre is a great experience and in fact at the moment I'm creating something new which is made up of elements that stretch back to my mask work in theatre, so it comes around again, this time with magic. Cheers Phil |

Pleasure to meet you as well Phil. This is indeed a warm place where we can share ion the magic together and feel free to ask the questions we want to ask. It helps us all to grow better as magicians.
It appears that we actually have quite a lot in common. I am also a person very much into advancing the art of magic through promoting creativity. I actually lecture quite a lot on the subject on how anyone at all can learn to be a more creative thinker in magic through easy to do tips, suggestions and exercises. It sounds like you may have the same philosophy in regards to how magic can and should be done to better advance our art. To me magic can and should be so much more then just a show of skill or technique alone. It should be more then just the art of fooling someone. There is nothing wrong with skill or with the "wow" factor but that is all so many magicians understand or seek. But how about character, themes or emotional response? Each of these are things I refer to as "layers" from which you can add to any act or routine to give that routine or act more substance. To give the audience more to grab ahold of and more to enjoy. We also have another thing in common ion that we are both writers. I am actually more of an artist by trade as I am a professional graphic designer and illustrator. However, I also have a passion for writing. I have had the pleasure to be a featured columnist for 2 ezines. One is Alan Watson's New Zeland ezine that I write for weekly and goes out to thousands world-wide. The other is monthly for a publication called Smoke and Mirrors. I love writing and the ability to share my thoughts on our art with others. Hopefully through my articles and writings, it opens some eyes to a different way of thinking about our art. I would love to see some of your writings if you ever feel like sharing them. Kyle
