Tannen's used to offer a manuscript of a coins across by Dai Vernon called "The Travellers" (no, I am not confusing this with the card effect from Stars of Magic of the same name), which I ordered several years ago but never received because the master copy had been accidentally sold. It came with four Chinese coins and cost $15. I am not sure if it is the same routine credited to Louis Tannen, published in one of the later Tarbell books.
The staff at Tannen's has authorised me to try to locate an original copy in order to make it once again available to the magic community. Please PM me with any information. Thank you. |

Interesting story, John, and one I've never heard. I've always seen "The Travellers" (the one that you're talking about) attributed to Lou Tannen. That's the credit in Tarbell #7.
Do you recall: a) when the set and the Vernon ms. was sold, and b) when the Vernon ms was supposedly written? You might contact David Ben through his website.

The Travelers was sold with 4 imitation half dollar size Chinese coins and an instruction sheet. It was very close if not identical to the routine Harry Lorayne wrote up in Tarbell #7. I still have the coins but the instructions are long gone. Lou Tannen himself demoed the routine for me and showed me his version of the Bertram Multiple Coin Changeover Palm which is the key move. I do the move differently and explain my technique in Chapter 11 of my coin book. It's also used once in my Boomerange Coins routine from the same book. The Bertram move was unnamed and not well explained in Stars of Magic (Passing the Half Bucks). I never understood why Vernon's name was attached to this since it seemed to be more associated with Bertram's style of moves.

You can see video of Bertram performing and explaining "Passing the Half Bucks" at the end of World's Greatest Magicians Coin Across. The video quality is poor, but you're able to follow along.

Curtis Kam-It was in my hard backed Tannen's catalog which I've had for at least twelve years. It's in a box in the garage now so I can't access it.
Larry, a very similar move was used by Al Flosso in his Seven Coins routine, published by Al Baker. Does anyone out there actually have this manuscript? |

Well, it's not in the hard backed Tannen's cat I have, from 1975. So it's before that I assume. We lost Vernon in 1992. So your Tannen's catalog from 1995--well, I don't know what to conclude exactly, yet. Guess we need to see the manuscript.
Or ask David Roth, he'd know.

1995 sounds about right. I'll try to dig it out this weekend.

I would guess the effect was released in the late 60s or early 70s. I remember seeing it in Top Hat Topics which Tannen mailed to his customers. Lou showed it to me about 1970. I also remember seeing it one of their catalogs with a caricature of Vernon. Someone must still have it.
