I received my copy of the book yesterday and have spent the last two days digging into the 90 + moves and tricks. The first thing I want to say is, if you're familiar with J.K. Hartman and his approach to card magic, buy this book! If you're not familiar with him or his card magic, buy this book! 'Card Dupery' is an extension of 'Card Craft', 'After Craft', and 'Trickery Treats' in that within it you'll find very interesting and original ideas and simplified variations of classic illusions that Mr. Hartman has become famous and admired for.
The book is produced by Hermetic Press and is very well made. As with most books from Stephen Minch's company, I almost want to unhide the book from the dust cover to display the very pretty lettering, book colors, and high quality that the book itself possesses. This is a big difference from the other 3 books, whom all are produced by Richard Kaufman. Richard's books are also well made, but don't have the extra visual flair and more classic style that Stephen goes the extra length to put in his books. The book is illustrated by Joseph K. Schmidt, whom you may not know passed away January 10th of this year (2007). His skillful free-handed drawings which number in the hundreds (thousands when considering all his contributions throughout the years) will be sorely missed. He never missed being able to convey visually what words couldn't. For the rest of the contents, I'll summarize as this post would be way long if I were to detail all the separate things in this large book. 'Card Dupery' starts off with sleights, which is typical of J.K.'s books. The first items are card forces, all which I found interesting. I know many forces and found all of these to be new and very interesting. After that are false shuffles and switches, some of those having two or three variations within the instructions. The card tricks themselves range from simplified variations of classics. 'Set-Two' is a very nice and simple variation of Paul Harris''Reset' trick. The same was done with 'Counter Re-Solution', a variation of Phil Goldstein's 'Counter Revolution'. There are a number of variations of 'Triumph', 'Open Prediction', 'Cutting the Aces', and 'Out of this World', just to name a few classics. There are a number of in-the-spectator's-hands card tricks, some which the magician never even touches the deck or just barely touches it. There is a chapter devoted to mind reading tricks and another with the gambling theme. I'm getting lost just trying to highlight the wide range of various effects. Like I said in the beginning, if you're familiar with J.K. Hartman's magic, this book is simply much more of what you've already experienced, and I came out equally satisfied. This book has tricks that will amaze magicians unfamiliar with Mr. Hartman as I've done numerous times at the magic shop. It's mentioned that all the tricks here have been tested with lay people. I have 4 in mind that I'll be performing this weekend, and probably to magicians. Highly recommended, Magically, Jack McCoy |

The thing I like about this book is that, the book is organised into sections which based on the nature of the effects/routines. Very helpful to readers plus there is an index of sleights, easy for referencing.
I really like the first part of the book which devoted to useful card moves which I really like them very much; some of them are very slick and very clever such as force, switch, etc. The thing I surprise is that there are so much of wealth knowledge in this very book and I can't believe that the force section I am now applying them in my current repertoire; most of them are practical. The routines and effects are very good, I would say it's not a typical book of seaching direct or any four ace-production kind of effects. It's filled with slick, cunning and very clever card routines. Check out the mental routines, this section I LOVED the most. It's a killer section! My final word is that, don't ever miss this very book! I considered this book is one of the best card magic book 2007 and I believe most card enthusiats readers will love and cherish this book in their whether hobbies, career as a professions, etc as this book (I believe) will induce mind stimulating and allow creative juices flowing in their minds. I believe that this book is great. This has been a great year for books - thank God, but it is unfortunate that it was released so late in the year. Looking at the poll for the best book of 2007 shows that Hartman's book has only two votes. It was close for me but I voted for Best of Friends vol. III partly because I have had more time to spend with it - since April - than I have with Card Dupery. I think it would be more fair to do as Hollywood does with the Academy Awards and have a cut off date. I have many of the books on the poll but I feel that just because a book was released in 2007 should not be the only criterion for voting. "Devil of a Bar and Pub" was JUST released and will not be given the same consideration as books that have been out longer.
I would make the cutoff date as June of each year to give time to readers to evaluate material. By the current criterion, ALL books released in 2007 are being voted upon. I applaud Christopher and Peo for their efforts but IMHO there should be stricter criteria. All of this being said, I believe that if Card Dupery had been released before June of this year, it would be much higher in the poll. Get this book!! Hartman is a VERY respected magician and thinking and blocking/structuring of each sleight and effect are stimulating. I have heard some people complain about the "dry" prose of Mr. Hartman's past books. I do a lot of material from those books and truly believe that "Card Craft" is a classic, and "Card Dupery" will be a future classic. Best, Vlad |
