I'm a hibachi chef and I've just started to dabble with magic to throw a few extra tricks into my show and I been looking at diffrent devices/gimmicks to give me that little fire flare I'm lookin for. These are items that I've been looking at. Pyrofreak, Fickle Fire and Flashpaper's Delight. It would be helpful if anyone could tell me if any of these items are as good as they are made to sound.

I just published Jim Gerrish's "Bang!Flash!" gimmick in three variations in The Wizards' Journal #14 on my site. It's a do-it-yourself gimmick that is easily made following Jim's photo instructions, using simple materials readily available (sources included). One of the variations may be just what you are looking for, but they basically light flash paper and near-by pyrotechnics with a Bang! and a Flash! just like the name suggests. No batteries needed.

One of the safest ways to ignite flashpaper or flashcotton is an electric SN 0 ignitor. Build your own safe electric circuit (on/ off with a key switch; test button with 2mA-led to check, fire button switch with areal professional switch) and you have the safest device ever. Use a lithium battery - the device can be stored a longer time.

BUT the good news is that instead of spending £25 on an igniter you can (and do) make it yourself (I say make its not that bad in fact you “put it together”) and I can make 25 for £25 – I made one – its easy to reset and can be done discreetly. Also its great fun! I love it. Play with it far too much and am nearly out of flash paper. The BEST $3 (£1.50) I ever spent! http://www.magicnook.com/WizJournal/WJ-14ALL.htm (about 2/5 of the way down the page). Then £2 for the “bits”. It is a GREAT idea and I would suggest if you use flash paper and want to ignite it easily, quickly and be empty handed at the end this is a great option. I am going to rig one up to a fire eating torch. Nice one! |

Someone mentioned this on here a few years ago and I've been using it on occasion ever since.
A quick disposable way of setting off flash paper (with a bang) is to empty out a party popper and put flash paper (or even better cotton) in their. I mentioned it to a friend of mine and he ended up usinginstead of his original electric method as it was actually more reliable. George P.S. It's probably not very safe, don't do it. |
