I did purchase his Flash Appearance years ago. All it does is the appearance. Now I noticed a demo of his flash appearance. It can also disappear a person: http://aleena.com/tilford/flashAppearance.html It also comes with a light you can use instead of a flash pot. Anyone else makes this?

It's made by Robert Simone here in the Shoals for Tilford. So Tilford is the only one that sells it. Robert asked me to appear in the demo for it, which he gave to Doug.
The light was a cool piece that Robert added. I wonder if Robert could just modify yours to make the new version. It can be done with and without the flash. |

The video doesn't seems to be working.
Any idea if it's a strobelight or is it a regular halogen light that is timed to shine for a couple of seconds and then goes off before the appearance/disappearance is made. maps

You control the light with you foot, its manual. I don't remember what kind of light it is, too many months ago.

Is it set for one effect (appearance/disappearance) at a time. Or can the person appear, next walk back up to it and disappear without resetting anything?

I have made a few flash appearances/vanishes that can be used in sequence without reset...currently using one now for a Halloween show. The appearance uses a confetti cannon, the vanish uses a fire cannon. (We are working outdoors.)
I'm not sure how others build their's, as I came up with my own method for doing both effects (although I'd assume it's more than common). I'm just saying that it can be done.

I have decided not use the roller blinds for the job.Instead I've decided to use another method.
Blinds are such a pain.

The Archway Illusion in Jim Gerrish's PVC Pipe Illusions Book 1 (on my site) can be used for both appearances and disappearances, but the only problem I have with that is that the disappearance would be anticipated once you stepped back into the same illusion. Also, how do you reappear to take your bow, collect your check, and so on? In my opinion, a different vanish that allows for a quick "getaway" and a fast run around to the back of the audience for a final reappearance ( a transposition, in other words) makes a more satisfying conclusion to a show. A good example might be Jim's Garden Gate Illusion, from the same Book 1, or combine that with his Utility Cabinet, which can fall and crumple flat on the stage with a bang for a startling vanish from center stage with no flashes, no smoke and very little expense.

The flash appearance/vanish that we are currently using is part of the set design. It also serves as a doorway that is used several times during the show. In fact, let me better describe it... The door frame is built into the set. There are 2 sliding doors, either one can be pulled across the door frame. When open, either (or both) of the doors is concealed behind the set walls adjacent to the door frame. One of these doors is basically an open framework with a huge spiderweb filling the opening. Think of it like the front grid on a giant Square Circle. This is the door that is used for both the beginning appearance and the vanish. The other door is solid. It has other uses. I should also mention that the person who appears in the beginning (me), is not the same person who disappears near the end of the show (another actor). There is another point in the show where 2 other actors appear at the same time in the door frame, and it is totally open at the time. The fact that there may be a foreshadowing of the disappearance is of no relative concern to us, as it fits nicely within the plot. The vanish is anticipated, much like we all know the Wicked Witch of the West is going to disappear when she does. The vanish does not rely on the element of surprise, as the appearance somewhat does. Even when expected, the effect still looks magical. We know this to be true from the audience reaction at the moment of the trick. Further, the different effects use differing, although somewhat related methods, and none uses a spring roller. The appearance uses an idea I found in one of Paul Osborne's Genii columns. It is brilliantly simple. I noticed above that I said I came up with my own method for doing both effects. How that should read is that I came up with my own method for doing both effects with the same piece of equipment, and without the need to reset anything. The idea for the vanish, I did develop independently, and at a time when I was using spring rollers. We opted for the different, non-roller method this time (our first time), and with few exceptions, see no reason to ever use them again for this trick. The fact that our solid door is closed at points in the show gives us the opportunity to set for the other appearance of the 2 actors. The method is not exactly the same as the original appearance. Conceivably, it could be preset from the get-go. We just didn't do that. The vanish however, is ready to go from the very beginning, and could be done at any time with no additional prep needed. ~michael

Michael: I tried to make it clear I was discussing Jim Gerrish's Archway and because it is in this thread, also Tilford's Flash Appearance. Having never seen your act, I wouldn't presume to make references to it.
I like your description of the effect, and your method of performing it sounds excellent.
