Requesting a review for this piece. Would like to see some OTHER people's thoughts before I purchase.

I know what you mean by OTHER people, I saw the other thread and I was a little suspicious of what reviewers spent their hard earned money on the DVD or who got the secret for free. I will first tell I did recieve this months before its release date and I am very pleased with it. I will explain to you how my last performance of instinct went and I think that will give you an idea if this is for you. I was at a party and there was a bag of styrofoam cups on the other side of the room. I told someone to pick out any 3 cups and bring them over. Earlier I noticed a thumbtack on a message board and I placed it nail side up on the floor. I told the girl who was holding the cups to place one over the tack and when I leave the room to mix them up. When I came back I took off my shoes and socks and slamed my foot down 1 and 2 and then showed that I avoided the tack. During the effect I never touched or marked the cups until I smashed them. This effect is great for situations like I just described, I would not recommend approaching someone with some cups and a nail though I just don't think they would believe or they would think you walk around with a nail and 3 cups all the time and what normal person does that? All in all I would say get it because a magician can never have enough things that require no prep and are not card or coin tricks.

An honest review.
I just received my DVD of Instinct, and just watched it. It's not long and it's not hard. So time would not be an issue for a review. Let's start with the DVD quality... It's fine. Nothing special. Your typical magic DVD. Now... on to the effect. This is the hardest part... let's see... Is it a good effect? Yes. Is it the best of these types? No. Why? Because there is a part left out of the promo video. That is, the nail gets put under a cup while the magician is watching. Then... the magician turns around and they are mixed up. Other versions don't do this. My version, Tetanus which is the same as SPIKE, does not. The spike gets put under any cup, they can be mixed up, all done while the magicians back is turned. I think this makes for a better performance. Because the audience doesn't think that you just marked the cup. Not that you do with Instinct. With Instinct, you do not nick or mark the cup in any way. Matter of fact... It can be done without the magician ever touching the cups. So.. a good effect, but not the best. Now the method... I must admit that I never thought of this in any way. I never noticed this in any way. If I would have seen this done in person, it would have got me. At least at first. If I studied it enough, I MAY been able to figure it out. But I doubt any lay person could. Final thoughts... This is pretty good, and I will use it. I can see me doing it as a close up effect, but probably will stick to my version for my stage shows. Also... it's a little pricey. For a one trick DVD, even though there is a sort of bonus, $35 is too much. One trick DVDs should be no more than $25. Randi |

Hey Randi,
Thanks for the review. I'm glad you enjoyed the method for it. As for the price...I would like to point out that this is available on penguin magic for $26. And that is without the discount I believe. So, anyone interested...they have it cheapest. Later. Matthew Mello |

Just received the DVD today. And I LOVE this routine. Incredibly clever and workable. I primarily do trade show presentations and have a big one coming up in a few days. I assure you, by this time next week, I will have gone through a minimum of 75 styrofoam cups. I expect this to play BIG.
I watched the DVD, and put the necessary elements together. Found the cups I needed at Safeway. Decided to use a rusty screw in lieu of a nail (particularly painful looking). Did a trial run for my neighbor in his kitchen. After flattening the third empty cup, I picked up an apple and used IT to slam down the last one. I really recommend this. When the screw blasted through the apple, the sound was particularly wet and nasty. The look on my friend's face was priceless. The moment just hung there. OOoohhh boy, what fun. I walked out eating what was left of the apple ...... I'm thinking that for the trade show, since I'll be doing 12 performances a day, I might replace the cardboard disk with a wooden one. Possibly with some mysterious red stains on it from a few little "mistakes" I've made in the past. Thanks Matthew for a great contribution. I am so looking forward to next week's show. I'll let you know how it plays out. Oh, and if anyone's wondering. Hell YES, this is worth the money !! |
