I realize many will not see the review I just put down under Devil of a Bar and Grill but I advise you check out what Raven and myself had to say about it. This is an amazing book and should at least be on your radar.

How would you compare it to "the vernon book of magic" or "the stars of magic" or "vernon's tribute to leipzig"?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

From an entertaining standpoint I'd say it is better than those listed. From a presentational standpoint I would say not. You see I tend to put magic into three catagories, maybe four now that I think of it.
1. Magic tricks and essays (the Stewart James stuff, The Magic of Michael Ammar, the Dingle material etc.), The Vernon Book of Magic, Stars of Magic 2. Magic tricks but with an attempt at being entertaining: Sessions, Devil of a Bar and Pub 3. Biographies that may or may not include routines: Wise Guy, Fogel, Houdini 4. Performance: Stronger Magic, etc. The reason this is a great magic book is it is very well written, is entertaining, has a lot of great material...a lot. That is a very broad and general statement. If I was going to sit down and list the magic books that I think are the best that I've read and studied I would have to say it would go: Must have: 1. Tarbell as a course 2. The Vernon Book of Magic 3. Card College 4. Modern Coin Magic For those that I would want close at hand: 1. Wise Guy (I just love that book) 2. Devil of a Bar and Pub 3. Dai Vernons column from Genii 4. Enchantments by Wesley James 5. Essential Stewart James 6. The Fogel book |

Note I said in the last few years! I've not seen all the books to come out but the ones that have come out in the last few years I'm comparing.
I love that The Dai Vernon Book of Magic and it should already be in the collection of any serious performer. I love Vernon, what can I say. I even love Derek Verner! Cranky he may be.... |

I am going to have to hold off on Devil of a Bar and Pub unfortunately. As much as I would like to buy it next, Todd Karr has made available a complete run of TOPS magazine on two CDs for fifty bucks. I have seen TOPS referenced in so much literature I simply cannot pass this up!
Of course, I COULD join the Conjuring Arts Research Center for 95 bucks and get complete runs of a ton of magazines, but at this point I own: The Sphinx, The Jinx, The Phoenix (old and new), Kabbala, Pabular, Spellbinder, Ibidem, Hugard's Magic Monthly, Stanyon's MAGIC, The Wizard, The Magic Wand, Pentagram, Compleat Invocation, Swami/Mantra, The Gen, and a few others. I am afraid I might be paying for a lot of what I already have, plus, I am not sure if these complete runs on Conjuring Arts are available as downloads or only viewable on the site through the Alexander database. I like to "own" my material not rent it. Although, they DO have Bascom Jones MAGICK there. Could be worth the price of admission. Anyway, I HOPE Devil of a Bar and Pub will still be in print in December. Sorry for the tangent, Vlad |

Yikes, forgot about Apocalypse and Richard's Almanac, although I do not think they are on the Conjuring Arts site.
I am really excited however about the rave reviews Devil .. is getting. I should really just buy both and forget food and shelter!! Vlad |

If you have access to the oldies but goodies you'll survive. What the devil etc does is it takes the gems found in Tops, Apocalypse, Genii, etc. and puts them into a single place. Kinda like a monster greatest hits. You know how they say "I've forgotten more about magic than most will ever know"? You'll find out how true that is when you are reminded in books like Devil, Tops too, can't go wrong there.

Thanks Leaping Lizards! I am truly excited to order this work. I have never been steered in the wrong direction by my experiences at the Café. And the production values of other works from Leaping Lizards have proven to me that I am in for a treat with a tome filled with workable ideas and effects.
Thanks for your hard work and dedication in bringing great magic to the community. All the Best, Vlad |
