What Cups and Balls are the largest?

Auke van Dokkum has an enormous set called "Chicken Cups" that are around 5 inches in diameter. I guess if you could load chicks under chick cups, then you can load chickens under these. That is of course if you can keep them quiet in your servante or pouch or pocket or wherever.

...And one step up in size from the Chicken Cups are Auke's 'Monster Cups'. Bill Palmer has a photo of one of these in his Cups and Balls Museum.

The "Pickled Punks" of the Maryland Renaissance Fair use plastic garbage cans painted silver. They use giant foam rubber balls (larger than a basket ball) and large foam pieces that look like various items that match their presentation (e.g. a large wedge of Swiss cheese, etc.).
Their presentation is a marvel of choreography (using some traditional C&B moves and a dash of Vernon) and actually fools the audience while making them laugh. I’d say that they had the largest cups and ball set-up.

I guess it depends on how you define "cups" because any container such as a garbage can or flower pot is potentially a prop for cups and balls. I agree with richard that the "monster cups" from van dokkum are the biggest purpose-built cups that we know about (thanks to bill's museum website) but I suspect that the person who started this thread is probably more interested in the largest purpose-built cups that are commercially available. Does anyone know what cups fit this bill (bill ?)
Btw' I'm having a problem with my upper case letters on my computer. Sorry. Fortasse |

As far as "purpose built" cups, the Monster Cups from Auke are the largest diameter cups I have seen.
The tallest would be the ones that came from Castle Magical Services. I'm not sure they were actually made for the cups and balls, though because these cups do not nest well. The shoulder bead does not serve as a stop when the cups are stacked.

Are the Monster Cups even practical to perform with?

Auke can use them. I don't have a grip that allows me to pick them up one-handed. However, I'm working on a routine that will allow me to do three 5 inch final loads.
Their very size makes them interesting to perform with. In aluminum, they are more practical.

It seems like it would be exhausting to use those cups. On the museum you list them at over 4 pounds each. Also the diameter would make them difficult to grip.

That's right. You have to lift them with both hands, unless you have really big hands like Auke. Aluminum would make them a lot lighter.

Has he made a set in aluminum too? Incidentally, has auke ever explained what it was that possessed him to build such huge cups? For a very big audience perhaps?

He has made one cup in aluminum.
I'm not sure why he built those cups. Before he had even built them, he asked me if I would be interested in a set. He had no name for them, so I suggested he call them "Monster Cups."

That does sound like a good name for them, Bill.

Drop one on your foot, you may have a different name for them.

Can you imagine how much a solid "kicker" cup like that would weigh!

The largest cup is the one Bill is wearing, and it is obviously purpose-built.

Didn't David Acer do the cups and Balls on stage with garbage cans and soccer balls? (For me they are footballs but you americans keep mixing it up).
