Man Is Killed in Midtown Poker Game
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/04/nyregi......f=slogin The security of one guy on the door was a flimsy. Video, remote access and jail cage doors and not letting unknown guys in would be better. The cops etc will now be hotter on closing down the games now this man been unfortunately killed. Anyway I thought I would cite in case it effects anyone here who might be running game. I have been in a place when it was robbed but know few local games that have. They are targets for this as most don’t get reported since they are illegal games. All such games robbed I knew of had little or no security to speak of and were just asking for it yet it don't cost a lot.

Frequenting organized illegal poker rooms in any city has always had an element of danger to it.
The very nature of the room has the implication of reduced security of both players and their bankrolls, something always attractive to lowlifes like the ones who sadly shot this fellow in Manhattan. You know the folks running the room were taking a rake, and that implies the need for the room to attract new players to keep the tables going and the rake coming in. It's in the process of communicating with these potential new players that the inevitable "wrong" guy is going to hear about the new location of the poker club and the concept of ripping it off comes to fruition. In the old days guys like Johnny Moss and Doyle Brunson were always aware that they could get ripped off any time, and were ever vigilant of the possibility. Johnny Moss carried a sawed off shotgun and a pistol with him when he was a road gambler. These days, especially in Midtown Manhattan, those kinds of thoughts are (obviously) far from the players minds, and carrying pistols and shotguns just isn't done......something lowlifes obviously know about, and take advantage of at every opportunity, not just at the poker table. |

I hope Doc was not there !
I also thought it was interesting, when the article said that poker in New York is legal unless the house/organizers make a profit/cut. "The police did not say whether the poker game was legal. Generally, it is legal in New York to play poker for money, but illegal for the organizers to profit." Interesting

The card game in it was good, it seemed very real.
