Yesterday I finally managed a day off to try to catch up on my reading. First on my list was PONDERINGS by Sean Waters.
Others here have gone into great detail regarding the various routines, so I won't do that again. I found this e-book to be very well written and laid out. It's easy to read and the instructions are clear and concise. The material is clearly from the working repertoire of someone who has done these routines for real audiences under real conditions. The fat is cut away, leaving lean, mean, devastatingly strong effects that will WORK. The only caveat I might give to those thinking of buying is that there are a couple of routines that presume familiarity with two marketed items: KENT and Kollosal Killer. The items are referenced as part of routines in the book, but for obvious reasons, are not explained in Sean's book. I applaud Sean for sharing the fruits of his labours with the rest of us, and I look forward to reading more from this very creative and insightful thinker. - entity

Thanks R Dunn and Tone, I am so glad you have found something of worth in the ebook. Thank for posting on my behalf. It means alot.
Jaded, I am glad you are still using the ideas. They are simple (but effective). I appreciate all your post saying so. Entity, thank you as well for the kind words! I am glad you enjoyed "Ponderings"; your approval means a great deal. Sean |

A well deserved review that pretty much nails the material on the head. If you're on the fence about this - read the above review Sean posted and you won't be for much longer.

I am still trying to wrap my mind around all of the possibilities inherent within "Ponderings."
The effects and techniques are sublime as is, but the esteemed student will also find within its pages a launching pad to develop his/her own ideas. This is a modern underground classic. I am very happy to have access to the knowledge Sean has so graciously shared. DT3 |

Great book.
Avalon is fantastic and is going into my rehearsal schedule from monday. PC Principle I'm also loving. Its a brilliant piece of thinking that can be applied to many effects and is currently helping me solve a small, but very important, scripting issue I was having with Blindsight. One tweek like that already makes it worth the price if I was inclined to think of it in that professional way. In fact, I wasn't thinking in those terms at all as I read. I was to busy smiling. Nice one.

I have been meaning to post my review of Ponderings for some time now, but since I have been busy finishing my own book I simply have not had much time to post here at the Café lately. However, posting a little something is better than not posting anything at all.
Ponderings is simply too good for me not to at least take a minute and make some sort of comment, even though it won't be in as much detail as I'd like. However, perhaps mine really do not need to be that lengthy, as they mirror almost all of what has been said above. Just simply add my name to the list of those that concur. From some private coorespondence with Sean, it seems he and I have been "pondering" along the same lines on a couple of effects that I offer / am writing up, and I love his twists and turns! For me, "K?NT" was worth the price of the book as I am a fan of Mahood's "KENT." Sean's working and additions truly take it to a whole new level. It creates another of those rare effects where you truly need NO props at all, other than a spectator's mind. I have been using this, will continue to refine MY presentation of it, and am looking forward to forever adding it to my kit of "A.A.A." no-NOTHING-at-ALL required mentalism pieces. In my opinion, if you are looking for some great mentalism routines and theories, you certainly will not be dissapointed in a purchase of "Ponderings!" Bryn

Illusioneer and Stuart: I am so glad you are getting some use out of the routines. You are gentlemen to say so. I could not be more pleased that you have liked it.
DT3: Thanks for the praise. I really appreciate the kind words (again). I am a big fan of your recent release as well (as you know). Great work! Thanks Bryn! Your approval means alot. I am glad the items have pleased you and there is no question that we have been (separately) coming up with some similar ideas. So, it sounds a little funny to say I really like your thinking, but I do. I can't wait for your "Safwan Papers" book to be released. I am looking forward to seeing the final product. Your posts are all appreciated! Sean |

I always feel that the best mental effects are those you create and adapt yourself. This way, the effects will not only have more meaning to you personally but you can tailor them to fit your style and personality.
And I always feel that if I can get one good idea or effect from a book then it is money well spent. And if, on the rare occasion, I get two or more ideas, then it is a real and rare bonus. And in Ponderings I feel I have hit the jackpot. Not only is HTP a superb design duplication effect that I know I can use but Ponderings contains some principles and ideas that can be adapted and used in so many ways. (Already I am thinking of using Red Handed with imaginary coins, dividing the denominations between silver and copper until you get down to the predicted choice.) At the end of the year there is much interest in 'best buys' or 'best books' of the year. I have no doubt Ponderings will be up there – and will certainly have my vote. A brilliant and most importantly, very practical book. Thank you Sean for sharing so much of such value. |

Hi,
just wanted to add to the overwhelmingly positive feedback for 'Ponderings'. regularly. The quality of the document is absolutely of the highest order. The content matches up to it. I have had Ponderings a few weeks now, absolutely loving it, and have been using three of the effects regularly. K?NT - Firstly many of you will be familiar with KENT, the effect upon which K?NT is based. I found the original got mixed reactions. Sometimes great but other times a bit weak, like when your spectator knows something fishy is going on but cannot quite figure it out - they could sense some kind of puzzle or fishing. For this reason I hadn't used KENT for a long time. Sean has essentially added two twists, subtleties, that you may be familiar with but I doubt would have thought of using with this effect. They strengthen it and give you an opportunity to really appear to be doing what you are supposed to be doing. I now love this thought of card effect. I have been using it with two people at once and find it plays even stronger. RED HANDED - The first mentalism effect anyone did on me was Kenton Kneppers 'Truly Invisible' from Kolossal Killer. It pretty much got me hooked on mentalism. In Ponderings Sean explains how he had heard how the 'TI' effect appeared but did not own a copy of KK so did not know the method. So he had a go at coming up with his own method and was lucky enough to have come up with a unique approach. The thinking is superb. This is essentially a psychological force of a playing card. Stop relying on luck. This really is 'the real work'. After doing these two effects in a row on someone, shamefully about 30 minutes after reading the document, I felt a buzz about mentalism that I have not had for some time. HTP - this is essentially a presentational plot for Sneak Thief. I use business cards and have only performed it a few times, but to great effect each time. Again the main bonus for me is that it really does justify why you are doing what you are doing and gives you the space to put everything into your presentation. All in all a superb product and well worth the money. I look forward to further releases from Sean. Anthony

Thanks Anthony and Neil! I appreciate the kind words and the enthusiasm. I have really enjoyed both of your releases as well.
I really enjoyed "Reality is Plastic". It is fantastic. I am really impressed at how thorough and well done the book is; great work. The design and layout are Neil, as you know, I appreciate having "Page of Thoughts", as well. Thanks so much for that. It's funny, sometimes the best solutions are hidden in plain sight. I really enjoyed your idea! With regards, Sean |

Hi all,
I also wanted to add to the overall positive comments. Not so often do I purchase an ebook and feel that I get my money worse of ideas or brainstorming potentials. here I got a litlle of everything. a directly workable addition to an already amazing routine that brings it into the " is that guy for real??" with K?NT. an essay on " why trying". I intuitively knew it, but couldn't say it... few psychological tidbits, red handed ( could it be the force for a mental epic routine?) and pc priciple ( tried it straight away on my grlfriend, not very subtle, but even then. it worked) very good addition to my collection... nice thinking Sean... Thanks for your book |

Sorry to resurrect this old thread. I've had some of Sean's works for a couple months now. And tonight I couldn't help but take the bait and round out my collection (just PayPal-ed for 'Ponderings' and 'Reflections'). Now I'm just waiting by my inbox like a Pavlovian puppy.
I hope to write up some brief thoughts after I've had a chance to digest. |
