Randy,
You don't have to repurchase the new editions. If you send E-Gads the old cover, we will send you the updated edition free of charge. Just mail the covers to E-Gads P.O. Box 80906, Rochester, MI 48308-0906. Definitely trade up for the new editions. They're greatly expanded with many new RB comments and performance tips.

Kind of off topic..those who don't buy books or pamphlets might want to check out Ron Bauer's Torn and Restored Newspaper video. This is a terrific method of a working performer's take on the torn and restored. It gives you a sample of Ron's fast talking personality.
You have to see this guy work for laymen to appreciate the way he takes a simple trick we all know and brings it to miracle class. |

Wrong person.... the T&R newspaper you are referring to is by Joel Bauer NOT Ron... but it is good.

That may be part of the problem. I've met J.Bauer once. That was enough. I had them confused the first time I heard of R. Bauer.
Another reason is, on another board, there was a guy just singing the praises of the RBPS. The problem was this guy sounded like a blithering idiot. He did more damage to Mr Bauer's name than an conviction for indecent exposure would have! As Steve had mentioned, at this time in magical history there have been more high quality books published in the last three years than I can ever remember, with 4 or 5 more coming out in the next 6 months. With these books going from $40.00 - $250.00, it's kind of hard to spend $240.00 for a collection of pamphlets, even though they may be as great as the books coming out. Finally, the young man on the previous page pretty much summed up the younger generation in magic (not all, but most): "Duh, I can't learn no magic tricks from no book. I gots to have a video!!" (just joking) Dave |

Good points. I also want to point out I owe an apology. I previously put "Tom Gattis" and it IS "Tom Gaddis"... sorry Tom. Tom is a student of Ron Bauer’s. I have not personally seen Tom work but have heard nothing but raves by a few close friends who don't pass out praise lightly. Tom swears by the series.

Tim,
No problem buddy. In reading the postings I noticed one point hasn't been brought up. Does the public like these tricks when they are performed? A growing number of my friends can speak from experience on this one. The public loves them so...so do we! That's reason enough for anyone to check them out.

I got "Bar Bill Stunt" and decided it wasn't for me.
I thought that everything was solid: patter, presentation, inner script, theory, etc., but this particular script wasn't what I was looking for. Just recently, I saw a friend's copy of "Cross to the Feminine Side," and "Chick Trick" and thought, "Man, this is killer stuff." I plan on getting those, as well as a couple of others. I'm also waiting for the egg bag routine to come out. |

Thanks Tim and Dave. I stand corrected. I was under the impression these were the same person.

I read this post a while ago, but never commented as I didn’t have any of the series.
Recently at TSD I got the chance to talk with Tom Gaddis (as an aside, he has a great performing style, and is a nice guy to boot). I saw him perform several of the RB series, and I was quite impressed. (Side Note: I have never been so entertained with a little hopping chickity) I think they are an absolute steal at 10 bucks apiece. I almost think they get less positive publicity because they are so inexpensive, if that makes any sense. It seems like every time someone releases a $35 booklet with 2 tricks it gets a lot more hype. I am glad they aren’t sold as a book, all bound together. I like to sit with one effect and try to learn it well. I’ll admit it, I can get overwhelmed (can’t we all?) when I have a book with 400 effects in it. Two things happen; 1) I try to go through and at least look at all of them, then sort out the goodies, and 2) I often wonder which effects didn’t have as much time put into them as others. With these I think there is a high level of confidence that they are all good, and well thought out. Granted, I did have an advantage as I had Tom right there to ask questions to. But I am sure RB would answer any questions about the series, too, and he obviously cares a great deal about them. Plus, in booklet form I can pick and choose what I want. Anyway, they get my Thumbs-Up. Just my thoughts… -Garrett |

I've bought a few and really love them. Feminine Side is a GREAT trick with a great script and a lot of entertainment value into one small trick. Plus it's not as long and drawn out as OOTW.

Yes, I know I am very late in this, but then maybe that says something about why I am so late to see this post, or the RB series
I saw the RB site for the first time earlier this year; I looked at it, and thought, what is this all about? and "walked" away. It just wasn't clear what the site was about, and exactly what was for sale, and for how much (this is still my opinion about the website). Last week I happened upon it, probably through a link from the Café, and still find it a bit arkane: the descriptions are not very helpful, and can only be individually seen when I run my cursor over them, and the information in the last few rows doesn't seem to display properly(it flashes off before I can read it all). It seems like the site doesn't really want to make things clear or convenient - I've yet to see a sale price on that site! Two, I can not tell from the descriptions exactly what I will learn beyond the trick itself(and the descriptions of the effect itself is vague). But I am willing to take the word of others that the patter & techniques/theory are good (otherwise, who needs another sheep & thieves or OOTW?). Three, If the value of these booklets is theory, I would like to get that in a unified book (e.g.; I like Pocket Power for both the effects and the theory). Four, as mentioned before, buying something that is telling you every word and gesture does seem to contradict the general advice to make the effect your own(patter, & presentation). In point of fact, a Online Vision's review of Dixie indicated that this trick would not be appropriate for many presentation styles. Five, currently, I am looking more for "parlor" type stuff(I would love to see a linking rings routine, but maybe will buy Hadyn's routine). I have a ton of close up effects from other sources that gave me more effects for the money(e.g.; On the Spot), and am fairly happy with them. Yet, the high praise from some Café members whose opinion I respect, has piqued my interest, enough that I am tempted to buy the Don Allan Chop Cup booklet even though I don't own any chop cups. I will probably hold off on the chop cup, but I am planning on purchasing a few of the others(Bar Bill, four squares, and some others) John

As a demonstrator, I've found that customers just plain won't buy a single routine in printed form, period. It's hard enough to get them to purchase books. But of course they'll gobble up overpriced shiny brass pieces of junk(MM,) or impractical cheap crap that they saw on a deceptive internet demo (JF,) or DVDs with eyecatching covers that promise to transform the purchaser into the next (insert name of current popular TV magician here.) I know this is nothing new, but I think it's the simple answer to your question.

Muckey is correct.
Also, most magicians are amatures and like learning lots of tricks. They also like learning from DVDs. This is the opposite of the Bauer line of material. Most pros are looking for ideas, subtleties, bits, lines, and a lot of material on the same kind of trick. The series probably seems unexciting to the amatures and they are the ones buying most of the "stuff" in the industry. Why buy a $10 trick in writing (even tho it has sandra's beautiful artwork and Ron's great scripts) when you can buy a $30 DVD with 10 tricks... and you don't even have to read.. I think I have almost all of them, now. I traded some tiny coin purses to Ron for several of these babies. I'm not telling which is my favorite. I'd hate for others to be using it where I perform.

I love this series. It teaches how to use a professionaly scripted routine, which is what the pro's do.
Well, there's a new one being released: Brother John's Final Ace rouine caleld Brother Hamman's Final(ly) Aces. Read more about it here: http://www.thinklikeaconjurer.com/all24r......over.htm Paul Chosse's ( what a clever guy he is ) Bar Built Stunt is my favorite and makes using a mismade bill workable. Chris

I tell ya after reading a number of these posts I can only conclude a few of you don't know what you're missing. People can debate the video vs. book vs. booklet format, but the information in these series is simply incredible.
The effects in the series are structured to entertain the public and help you think from an actor's point of view. The scripts provide a plot and structure that is proven to play well for an audience and ENTERTAIN! The performer bring his or her own personality and subtext to the scripts. After performing these scripts for several years, I know I don't follow every line verbatim. However, I follow the plot points and key lines and each time I get an outstanding reaction from the audience. I'll take Gadabout Coins Revisited over 3 Fly any day. After performing Gadabout Coins Revisited, the audience is left entertained, amused, and outwitted. 3 Fly is flashy and leaves the audience thinking "that's nice...what's next? Can you juggle?". Try out a few from the series and see what your reactions are from your audience. It is rather eye opening to see a consistent reaction from your audience where everyone is equally entertained and convinced you are a clever conjurer. After all, the goal is to entertain the audience... Andy P.S. If you think the Private Studies are good, you should see RB's kid stuff. |

Ron Bauer was a contributor adn columnist to Genii Magazine and Abbott's Tops Magazine for years. Before many of your were born or entered magic. He is a creative guy with more ideas than most in the world.
Why a video would not be a great idea. Because that is want Ron is selling, routine, timing, patter, and presentation. If it was on a video then he would not sell one booklet in my opinion. Most of the tricks are standard magic tricks and so it is not the secret but the performance tips and techniques given that you are paying for, besides his wifes fun drawings. Great series, but I think when all 24 sets are done, they will be published by Ron or someone in a complete volume. So, I will only purchase what I am really interested in and wait for the rest. |

Another reason they may not be selling better are the covers to the series. The cartooney approach does not sell spell or state MIRACLE to the buyer, and minimizes the value of the contents. Psychological, sure, but still... it affects the magic buyer pulling it off the shelf. More dramatic covers would sell more copies, I'd think.
