It's not self-working, but there isn't anything that should worry you if you're willing to put in a little practice. My best advice would be to get one of Dean's quality pads to perform on since it makes the "move" a lot easier.

I think you would be better off getting more background with coin magic and sleights before buying a thousand dollar coin trick. His full routine does require sleights. I recommend that you get his coin dvds first. You will learn a lot and learn a lot about explosion at the same time. Then you can decide if you want to put up the $1K.

He probably bought the used one from the for sale section for $300. Good luck with that.

You will need to spend considerable time learning the routine sequences, timing, and the precision needed to make this look magical. The moves on their own are not difficult, but it is putting them all together that is tough.
You will have to practice this countless times to get it to 100%. The nests are very finely stacked, and any lack of precision on your part will result in accidentally dislodging one at the wrong time. Practice, practice, practice! This does look really great once you have it down though. Paul h. |

I agree with Paul in that the choreography will take some practice since there are different phases to learn--nothing that only the top coin guys can do--it's just that getting the routine to look smooth takes practice. Well worth the time you put in. You'll have a real showpiece!

If your not that good with coins honetly all the sleights will be difficult at first, but will get easier with practice. I'm pretty sure no one ever just picked up a coin and did a perfect ROV vanish and placed it into classic palm on thier very first try. mastering the slieghts is the most crucial and important step of good magic. anyone with enough money can get the explosion set and probably do it fairly convincingly, but you definately cant open with it, you need credability from a few other tricks first, preferably with just sleights and non gimmicked coins. only then will explosion be a totally magical moment. but practise practise practise.

I know we are in 2012 almost 2013. Would just like to add that there are two similar effects one by
Johnny Wong called Coin Bomber which I have and it is not difficult to learn with a little practise. Comes with a DVD but Johnny does not speak very good English but the DVD is fine enough to learn the effect. It is USD 300. Johnny was kind enought to sign the DVD for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGMn93CrvdI <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YGMn93CrvdI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Another effect is by Henary Evans called Chinese Economy which is like the Six Cards Repeat but with 4 coins You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmsIDFhxc7M <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/XmsIDFhxc7M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> This one is about USD 150. Enjoy. |

Dean taught me Explosion personally and it's one of my favorite routines, and while it's not the most impossible thing to accomplish, it takes time and effort. Watch Dean's performance, or the video of Nathan Gibson doing it. Those performances are the result of countless hours of practice, but when you nail it (and you will if you put in the time!) it is worth every penny.

If you spend that much money on a set of coins, my advice would be, watch what others have done with it. Like Luis Piedrahita, for instance. Then create your own routine. It seems so redundant to learn someone else's routine, bit for bit, with no imagination of your own. And a lot less fun. My opinion is that Dean's routine looks just like what it is...a bunch of un-nesting. The world is waiting for you to come up with something better.

It is a nice ending, if you can end it the way Dean does in his video...but I would think high and low for a way NOT then have to pick all those "coins" up off the table in front of the specs after the effect is done!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I simply pick them up myself at the end of the routine and put them away. The most common response is, "Where did all of those coins come from?" Spectators don't know what nesting coins are; magicians do.

Sorry to hear how shocked you are that I would encourage anyone to be original. And sorry you have to roll your eyes if anyone else has an opinion different than yours. And thanks for sharing how you simply pick up the coins.
