Is there some unwritten rule on youtube that magic videos be overdubbed with terrible music and the performer has to snap his fingers?

There's no unwritten rule, it's just a matter of," Monkey See, Monkey Do". Finger snapping, hand/wand waving, magic word mumbling, riffling the cards, etc. has been used in magic (for many years) to convey to the audience that something/magic is about to happen. It can be annoying but when used in the context of an effect it can be entertaining. Just don't overuse it.
Cardamagically, Dom :)

A magic moment is important, but it does not need to be fnger snapping. And certainly it should not annoy.

Finger snapping sometimes gives the effect of drawing the attention, such as look here - it also an easy way of indicating something has changed. Some prefers to whistle, but in general, people attention tends to follow the hand.

Snapping your fingers? It's a matter of personal preference. Some people like to wave their hand mystically, some like to wiggle their thumbs, blow, or (yes) even snap their fingers. While a magic gesture is not always necessary, it can act as misdirection.

Snapping the fingers just means that the magic happens. It doesn't have to be a snap of the fingers but a wave or something like that.

I'll tend to make a goofy sound effect whenever I want to indicate the moment of magic. I may "pop" my lips as I show a coin has vanished, or some such thing. Of course I work as a comedy magician, so it doesn't distract for a serious performance like it might with some. Each to his own I suppose. I've certainly snapped to indicate a moment of magic, or at least an important moment in an effect. In fact I probably do it more often than I realize. When you think about creating the handful of important key images in the spectators' minds for them to backtrack on after the completion of the effect, snapping can be used to hone in on each of those moments. That was a clumsy sentence, but it's late (or early depending on how you look at it) and so I hope it made sense.

In coin magic a snap of the fingers serves to assure the audience that there is nothing in the hand that snaps. Most people have a hard time realizing that a hand can be doing 2 things at once, and we use that as, yet one more small proof, that all is as it seems...

I usually do a wave while classic palming a coin to convince the audience there are no coins hidden. Works very well.

At least for Japanese people, sanpping finger to get attention is a cheap way. There are many other appropriate ways.

Snapping your fingers indicates to the spectator exactly when the magic (supposedly) took place.
Also its helps to keep focus. What better way to keep peoples attention. Many performers use the “snap”, Gregory Wilson uses it every time he changes a card with the flip-it move. And if it’s good enough for him it is good enough for me. ~Adam |

Throughout history, mythology and literature, you must do something to account for the magic - you have to read from the magic book, go to the magic place, say the magic words, make the magic gesture, use the magic artifact, sacrifice the virgin, etc.
People kind of expect you to do something to make the magic happen.

Its not so much the snap. Its the 10 snaps in a 2 minute clip coupled with the fact that I cant even hear his snapping, all I can hear is Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails screaming he wants to **** me like an animal.

I like to vary what I use to 'make the magic happen'; a snap (sure, I use it), a gentle shake of the hand, a sound, a spectator waving a wand. It all creates a magical moment. Tina |

Well, I can't snap my fingers, and although I've tried for a while, it never worked out for me

Magicians snap there finger for many years already, this is when the magic happens, like waving the wand, but should not be annoying...

For me snapping is an important thing to do, to tell the spectator(s) that the magic is happening. I can't imagine myself "here your card, I put it in the middle, and it came to the top, again put in the middle, again on the top" without snap my finger.
I Agree with Tina I, not all the videos in YouTube worth looked for learning about performance. Yes there are a lot of them that very good, but the rest maybe not. |
