I am using compressed air in my snowstorm effect and am trying to quiet the hiss sound from the nozzle. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Chris

Since no one has answered you yet, I will give it a shot. I could be wrong on what is on the market as far as silencing devices or lack there of so at least here is an easy answer.
You are not going to like this answer but it is the easiest. Turn up the music! It will be harder to cover the hiss if the nozzel you need is creating the noise. You need that pressure so I would think anything off the shelf would create the noise. Not knowing what design you are using if you could put your nozzle further away, burried in some sort of insulation you might be able to knock down the dB. Think of a forced hot air heating or cooling system. If you are close to the Blower, it will be louder than if you are at the output vent. Kevin James once suggested something with air to me and I mentioned the noise. He too said "JUST TURN UP THE MUSIC." HOwever he works larger stages where this will work and well at that. The other thought is to add some sort of similar noise or louder noise at that point when it is making the most noise. In otherwords use the noise rather than try to hide it. |

Great advice! The music gets louder as I make the snow appear - the hiss sound is natural as it blends into the music. I'll turn up the db on the music higher than the hiss. Currently the hiss generates 78 db.
I made a modification to using my metal foldback chair, and am now using a highback leather chair which allows my hands to be closer to the source of air. I also use KJ's original stool and it can be modified for $500 for the quieter guts. I perfer the stool for the larger crowds, and my design for the smaller shows. I'll give it a try next week as long as all goes well.

There is an even better answer than just turning up the volume and it has always worked very well for us.
Get a monitor...another speaker for the challenged. Place it center downstage stage, just like you might see at a concert. Thru this monitor will be your music. The problem with just turning up the volume is the people in the first few rows are still closer to you & 'your noise' than they are to the main speakers. By placing a center monitor downstage, it will provide 'fill' and cover what you need to. Hope that helps. Kevin

Beautiful suggestion! I set it up a few hours ago and I was able to turn down the music a notch also. I strained to hear the hiss, it was almost impossible to detect! I found a muffled nozzle and ordered it through a supplier in England. I'll report back if I get a DB reduction.

I just installed the db reducing nozzle and I was able to reduce the noise by 15 db (A Scale) and keep the same velocity. The nozzle has a larger opening and a combed vent on the side. Interesting - I really don't know why it works, but it does.

Last night my neighbor brought me a gift to put on my front lawn. She just handed it to me. It is a 5 foot Mickey Mouse Santa - the kind that uses a blower to inflate. I am adding this on stage as a decoration. The blowing sound in the background will help mask the compressed air too.

Just a thought, but you could also add the sound of wind to your music. If it sounded as though the wind were bringing in the snow, your compressed air audio would just be another sound effect.

The wind is in the music, so that was a built-in benefit. The show went great - not a bit of detection... Now for today's show. Expecting a good size snowfall tonight - I might not need to do anything.

Manyl months ago I asked Kevin if he could modify my Snow Animator 1 with the new quieter technology. He replied it was not possible due to the space within the original stool. I prefer the look of the original KJ animator as I always think the newest model looks space age and doesn't look like a stool at all. Don't get me wrong it is a beautiful piece and would buy one if I could afford it. Apparently from your message he has found a way to modify the original now? That would be great.

Yes, he said new guts for $500. I did not hear back from him after that - for some reason he is not 100% good at returning e-mails. I gave up and made my own chair. It is quite different and certainly well made. I came up with an additional improvement thanks to TMC. I have one more obstacle to overcome which would make this wonderful chair a bit more user-friendly. It takes about 10 minutes now to set it up (in private). I'm looking for a way to cut that down to 1 minute.
