Okay! So what is everyone going to do DIFFERENT this year to make these goals a reality?
A few of mine: Market even more out of state. Improve web site. Increase correspondence with client list to 5 times/year. Create fun new give-a-way items. What's on your lists? :bubbly: A Happy & Prosperous New Year To All!

I am increasing my overdraft by between 15%-20% and my bank is raising it's fees (interest rates to you and me) by the same amount.

Sending out a steady qualified stream of marketing materials every month, and reaching a new market that began this year and will blow wide open the upcoming year - once again through marketing and word-of-mouth. That's what I'm gonna do. I will also be raising my prices for my next season of shows. Also, book a year in advance whenever possible.

So pleased so many are taking up the challenge.
I posted it within a few hours of the Café coming back online and wanted to get the marketing board off to a nice POSITIVE start. One point.... You MUST write down your goals to make them work. It's been said often, but just a reminder. You don't need to post the exact amount here, (but Edd, good on you) but you should know what you are shooting at. Dan, thanks also for the follow-up question. And for the lurkers out there... you still have a week to commit. |

"Dump agents who don't give me any work but still have me on their websites!" Why? Being on an agents website doesn't do any harm. Even if they only get you one job every 5 years its worthwhile isn't it? It's free publicity. Or am I wrong with that opinion? Loads of uk agents I've never worked for have me on their websites. Should I be worried? Phil |

This is weird. Two companies were doing their end of the year summery, at lunch, before the show. Both spoke about how sales were flat this year and how they are planning to cut back on employees and/or extra services in order to cut costs. Both were talking in expectation of a four year cycle of recession. & Both gave me a healthy tip on top of a nice fee to begin with, even though they seemed to be complaining about the future.
So in the following year I am going to ask more questions before quoting prices and create more options (packages) because I don't want to lose the customers that want me, but have lower budgets and I don't want to underquote the small segment of companies that will be raising their bottom line in the coming future in spite of the downturn in the economy that's expected (sorry for the run-on sentence) I realize, some buyers believe that having a magician (or magical representative-associate) increases contacts and therefore sales but others are looking at running their business in the new " lean" system. (Which isn't so new). I guess I just want to play it safe however there are a few customers I will never work for again even if they offer me triple . And - A happy new year to all.... and to all a Rices, good night, silk.

Phil - Just being on their website is not the problem so much as the fact that I get TONS of inquires and get asked to 'hold dates' because the booking is a 'sure thing' and then they go ahead and book their cheap go to guy.

I guess I'm basically culling a client too. For the past four years, I've taught a comedy defensive driving class on Sundays. Wonderful people to work for, but it's a loooong day (especially when working a full-time job during the week) and there are distinct limits to the amount of money you can make. I decided to take a leave of abscense to free up some time permitting me to improve my marketing and make more money with my shows.
Within a few days of telling the school director I was taking the leave, I had a little surge in inquiries and a couple of potential bookings for 2008 were confirmed! You think somebody up there was telling me something? Incidentally, I will say if you are looking for a venue to get some time in front of an audience (and be payed for it), defensive driving classes would be one to consider. It looks good on a resume and it will make you a better performer. Merry Christmas! Noel, Joe L.

For 19 years, the winter months (Nov - Feb) have been my most difficult. This year, however, after a massive re-design of how I do business (and for whom) - December was the best ever, and our January looks to eclipse the entire last year's income (and I did pretty well last year).
Raising rates for the sake of raising them doesn't seem to me to be the best motivation. Raising rates because you are offering your client(s) more than they are expecting - and you're very good at what you do - now that makes sense to me! -Eric |

So there we have it. The clocks ticked over and it's 2008.
And those above are the Tricky Business Forum participants who were willing to commit in public they would be raising their fee structure this year and some thoughts and ideas on how they are going to do it. Thanks for taking up the challenge. I'd like to reward those who did with a free ebook that perhaps might help you do it. Send me a PM and I'll send you either Magic Coach100, The Hunter Knot Routine or Magically Speaking. Your choice. If you have them all, I'll rustle up something else. I'm aiming for a $500 increase this year and a very thick velvet rope I hope your 2008 is as exciting as you hope it will be timothy |

Timothy,
That is awfully nice of you to offer that and I for one appreciate it. This is a greta place where we can learn and share openly with each other to grow our magic business and gor the magical arts as well. I for one will ne increasing my prices across the board starting effective today. Of course this was done only after evaluating our business model and basing it upon what we did last year, our overhead costs, costs for driving and gas, moving to a new area and finding out what we need to do to increase our business while maintaining the same level of solution providing. I wish each and every one of you a very prosperous and successful 2008. HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope we can use this thread through out the year as a way of showing everyone the status we are all making with the new prices we have set. That way we could continue to learn from eahc other. Kyle

I raised my prices before Christmas and this year I did half as many shows but made twice the usual money.
I have also put the "velvet rope" principal into play.

Less shows at more money certainly works for me Neale. Congrats and I wish you much continued success in 2008.

I'm with you Tim! But not by a whole lot only about $25.00 because I only do Birthdays. But hey, the extra $25.00 will be nice for me.
