I am really interested in creating some original effects using nitinol memory wire. Could anyone give me information on how I can set/shape the wire to create my own wiregrams (i.e. not just to reveal cards) Has anyone tried to do this on their own with success?

The wire also 'remembers' different shapes by holding in the desired shape and heating to 500°C for a few minutes. This is not somthing you can do at home but if you contact a small metal works or a place that temper metals they migth help.
Sorry I cant be much help but let us know how you got on.

I may have to disagree. I have fixed these before for people. When someone pulls on it while it's still hot it ruins the memory in it. You shouldn't bend, or pull, the wire until it completely cools down. I have fixed these before by bending them into the proper shape and reheating it up, with a lighter, and letting it cool down. It then works perfectly. I would imagine if you took wire, ruined the memory, reshaped it to the desired shape, heated it up again, and the let it cool down, it would work. Of course I am guessing. But my guess is based on the fact that these wires can be fixed if they get messed up. Randi |

The makers of Nitinol wire say it takes a carefully temperature controlled kiln and a holding jig to "memorize" a shape into the wire.
It sounds like Randi has had some success with a somewhat less technical approach, but at least be prepared to hold the wire in position during the heating/cooling cycle.

Ni = nickel
Ti = titanium NOL = Naval Ordnance Lab The “transformation” temperature is based on the ratio of the two primary metals. (Nickel – Titanium) Composition is typically 55%-56% Nickel and 44%-45% Titanium, but slight adjustments of this ratio can really affect the properties of the Nitinol. The early manufactures were Beta-Phase and Toki . Later Mondo-tronics and others started buying the wire from one of the early manufactures and doing their own training and reselling the product. The transition temperate can be from high enough temperatures that can burn your hands all the way though body temperature, and as low as room temperature. Typically they are drawn cold (The amount of cold work a material had prior to its shape set anneal sets strength of the material) and then heat treated for the memory effect to work. But general statements about training exist on the internet.. Quote: A new memory is imparted by restraining the material in exactly the shape required and heating to a temperature above 932°F (500°C) for a minimum of five minutes. The shape will be set upon cooling and will exhibit the same flexibility and resistance to deformation as the original wire. And it can be repeatedly retrained to achieve new shapes. End quote: Quote: it is often necessary to form the material into a new “memory” shape. This is done by firmly constraining the material into its new shape in a fixture or on a mandrel and then performing a heat treatment. The heating method can be an air or vacuum furnace, salt bath, sand bath, heated die, or other heating method. The temperature should be in the range of 500-550C with higher temperatures resulting in lower tensile strengths. Cooling should be rapid to avoid aging effects, a water quench is recommended. End quote: My original experiments with this type of material were done in the mid 80’s. And using some of Toki's first products, I believe from a Dr. Homma and then later from Beta –Phase. I first met with “Mondo-tronics” in the late 80’s. Sorry the engineer slipped out for awhile.
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.
