If you enter a magic competition how can you get the most publicity out of it and how do you handle it?
If you win first place, what do you write in the press release? Are there other possibilities? -Koenraad |

You put "award winning" on your promotional material and above all keep in mind that no one else really cares.

To an extent Al is right. Winning contests can help you to a degree but only so far. Also, the contest that you won an award at needs to reflect the market that you are working in. In other words if you won a stage magic award but you perform mainly in a childrens' show market, then the fact that you won the stage award does not carry with it as much weight.
Winning an award can be used for credibility or to back up your level of professionalism. But the award should directly reflect the markets you work. If you are a close-up performer and do mainly reaturant work, then an award of you winning a few close-up contests might benefit you. You certainly can place award-winning on your materials and place the award on youe website as well. I would certainly do a press release and/or an email mailing out to your mailing list. That helps to keep your name fresh in their minds. Just remember that an award can certainly help you bbut in no ways should be the only or main part of your marketing direction. Bottom line is that prospects want to know how you can directly meet their needs. they want solutions to the problems they are faced with and you need to show them how you can benefit them. Hope this helps. Kyle

A press release is one of the best things to do. I sent out only 10 press releases and got published in 1 magazine a few months back. They always want good stories, just think about how the editor can BENEFIT from publishing your story.
As for the whole "Award Winning Magician" why even have that? It sounds so cheesy and corny no one cares. All clients care about is that they look good for booking you and you do a great job! Giovanni Livera is a good performer to look at who has won the IBM Gold Cups. He mentions it, but it goes along with his other awards (ie. NSA Hall of Fame). When you have a list of awards is when it appeals to people. Josh London |

I think a list of of accomplishments always helps a client/agent in deciding to book you if they have not seen you before or you were not referred to them.
I use my past television appearance, history of the particular trick, famous people I have worked for, past countries I have performed in, my performance style, and print media as a combination of promoting my skill. I tend to get in one or two publication a month.... Press release are important. I think winning a magic competition could be great local small paper coverage.... OHH my next major coverage will be this spring in THE EMMY Magazine.... Check it out.... It is about people getting on reality shows...

Curtis is right. There is a lot of information and templates that you can use and follow online with a simple search. You can also earch here at the Café as I know we have discussed press releases in the past. You may find some great information to help you along.

I remember when Scott and Muriel won the top prize at fism. When they rang all their family and friends no one understood how big a deal it was. They had to explain the win first!

They have really helped me a lot. I charge quite a bit so I actually tell my client to go to my website and look at my awards. When a lay person sees this think Man he must be good. Just my two cents.
