you can perform this as many times as you want, wiht a different can every time. You modify the can yourself every time.

Hello, all.
Is Healed & Sealed PRACTICAL? Is it truly impromtu or perceived as truly impromtu? (See below for my concerns) I want to state right off the bat that I do NOT own this effect (Healed and Sealed). I think I understand the basics of how this effect basically works but that is NOT the reason for this post. What I want to be able to perform is truly impromptu magic (or at least magic that appears impromptu). On another topic dealing with H&S, I seem to recall someone mentioning that the effect is NOT truly impromptu (i.e., you can NOT go over and pick up a crushed soda can that has been discarded by a spectator (at a company picnic for instance), and then picking up the can you can immediately restore it to a new can of soda with the soda in it). This person mentioned that the effect could NOT be done this way. He mentioned that there was a significant time period elapsing (for the "get-ready" and preparation) from the time the crushed can is picked up by the performer until the time of the resoration". He stated that "H&S is not able to be perceived as impromptu. IMHO, if H&S is not impromtu, I think the effect suffers and is diminished in its impact and potential. NOW FOR THE QUESTION: With the foregoing out of the way, and now knowing what my criteria are, and without revealing the secret(s) of the how the effect is performed, in your opinion, is the H&S practical, and, knowing what you now know about my performance criteria, do you "think" that I would be satisfied with the effect or would it probably sit "on my shelf"--whether H&S comes with a prop or is just the instructions. And again, as you can tell from this last statement, I haven't a clue as to whether H&S is a gimmick, a prop, just a "how-to" explanation or a combination of any of the above. And I am not asking you to reveal any of the secrets that are integral to this effect. I certainly appreciate any time you might give to answering and addressing these concerns of mine. Please feel free to send me a PM if you deem that more desirable than a public post. Thank you. Turk

Turk,
I was very hesitant to pick up this effect knowing that it wasn't truly impromptu. However, I did grab it since the price was right and decided to give it a try. I thought to myself, "well, I could always add this to my DOOZIES Shelf" Lord knows I purchased some louzy things in the past. In any event , I got the booklet and although I didn't think it would be strong. I was proved wrong! People I've done this for, give that ultimate "how the Heck" look! I was shocked the first time I did it and saw the reactions. My wife and Daughter who over the years very seldom give me that " how did you do that look" ask me quite often now, "do that soda trick again!" They seemed impressed when the can started healing itself but were even more shocked when I popped the top and drank it afterwards. The setup only takes me a couple mins tops and then it's just a matter of how you want to present it. I am truly shocked by the effect this has on layman. I would recommend this to you. It's only $12.00 or so and I'm very pleased. Once reading over the manuscript you probably will think what I thought , "This is probably gonna be silly" But after the first time I was simply amazed at the response. |

I had to laugh silently to meself a week or so ago in my "Natural Disasters" class that I'm taking this semester at San Diego State University. I thought of Healed & Sealed (which I bought late last year). The professor was explaining how volcanos violently erupt due to the magma as it rises up through the central shaft of the volcano.

I recently went to a holiday party and brought a prepared prop with me secreted in a bag of other stuff for the party.
At a point during the evening the host mentioned that I "do magic" and, of course, I was asked to "do something"... First I borrowed a fork and between a few of the other guests bent the thing all out of shape. Of course there was a nay-sayer or two that insisted the host had provided a "trick" fork... So I said; "Oh..." and ambled over to the trash can and retrieved a crushed, empty soda can... The nay-sayers are still scratching their heads... Not impromptu... but can appear that way.
Boy: Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth? Boy: There is no spoon. Neo: There is no spoon? Boy: Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself. |

David, what books or videos teach you how to bend forks or spoons?

Psychoknetic silverware video by Bankacheck (how do you spell that?) is one, Mindbenders DVD teaches three tricks one of which is spoon bending.

Speaking of bending silverware...
Can anyone recommend Barry Price's Spoon Bend? I see a few comments here and there after a search, but nothing specific enough to make a decision. Worth the investment? |

I have the Barry Price spoon bend and it has a prominent place in my drawer. Get the Banacheck video if you want to get into bending spoons.

I got into "bending" with a video by Bavli... when Psycokenetic Silverware came out, I got a copy of that and recommend it over the Bavli one.
Of course... I have added my own "twists" to the fun...

Brainstorming and thinking out loud:
How can you make H&S impropmtu or at least create the appearance of improptu? I like David_Libertine's "get ready" solution. However, that solution may not always be available. Here's another possible solution: Finish off (drink) a soda, crush the can, make it disappear. Immediately have it reappear (the H&S) and then do the H&S routine. Turk

Say you are at a picnic or in the company breakroom. Someplace where people have easy access to, perhaps, cold cans of Coca-Cola. Someone drinks one and throws it in the trash or recycle bin.
Magic is brought up somehow (you do a flourish and they inquire, you bust out a deck and have them pick a card, whatever) and you show them some stuff. They are skeptical. So you mosey over to the trash can and pull out "their" can. You perform Healed & Sealed, they soil themselves, you leave quietly with a grin just on the tip of your lips. The point is this: How often do YOU pay attention to what is in the trashcan when you throw something away? If you are like most people, you do it very infrequently. If you are looking to secure the authenticity factor of using a totally random and ungimmicked object, then that is the key. This can be performed without all the arrangements beforehand. Yes, you still have to set up beforehand, but it doesn't need to look that random for the trick to knock people over. You can walk into a room with a crushed can, drink the last little bit from it, then restore it instantly. Even hand the can out to be examined at then end, and, if you setup right, more than 99% of people will not find a thing. It is possible, but it has not happened yet for me. Of course, saying anymore about what they could find wouldn't be allowed, but it is only $12 man! Oh, and don't settle for Downloadmagic.com's Re-Pop. Anders's version is the best.

HN Review 48: Healed and Sealed – Anders Moden
AD: The performer shows the audience an empty, crushed can of soda. Magically, the can starts to unfold and all the dents pops out until the sides are perfectly straight again. Then, with just a touch, the opening seals up. The can is now in perfect condition, as if it has been moved backwards in time. It is not only healed and sealed, but the can has also become magically refilled, which is shown as the performer opens the can and pour himself a drink. One normal can is used. The soda is normal, and can be consumed. The can is handed out. No switch. This effect was invented by Anders Moden in 1997. In 2002, the TV-rights for this effect was bought by David Blaine and it was performed in the TV show "Vertigo". REVIEW: Looks good. The can cannot be carried around, so you should perform this one at home or in a planned location (alas, no TV until 2005). The major weakness is that the can is not fully examinable - and some spectators are sneaky... Overall rating: acceptable H.

I think we were getting out of topic with the bending spoons and stuff. Anyway, I own this effect. You can make it seem impromptu. This is practical for me, because I'm known around here as a kind of mentalist. So I have special abilities to heal things lol. Anyway There is no gimmick, that's the good thing. I hand out the can for people to drink. I put the little something in the back so they won't find when they drink from the can. Anyway doomo I would love to hear how to walk around and carry it. That's a big problem for me because it doesn't stay c*r***at**d . I can't heal it after that. The booklet says if it stays still, it will work for a long time.

I performed healed and sealed. It got an ok reaction, but not one of the best compared to other effects that are more practical and reset quick.
It's ok. I don't think it is very practical for walk around even though Blaine and his staff make it look like that kind of effect. |

Why couldn't it be impromptu?
Think about it, ask a sectator for a soda can, if they are holding a can of coke, or what ever matching can you have with them, then say watch, go into a backpack or your coat pocket, depnding on how your performing, state you need a magic wand, under cover, just switch the two cans. BOOM. Impromptu... well at least it look's that way, but you catch my drift. I'm not sure how this effect work's but I am looking into it, and I am buying the perticular effect. So you should try the method to make it look impromptu, if it works... i'm not sure wether or not it will though. |

What do you think you do when you just pick it out of a garbage can or the street? That's impromtu enough.

The appearance of impromtu, is far more important than whether or not it really is impromptu.
Impromptu; unprepared, unplanned, spontaneous, improvissed, spur of the moment.... How much magic that you do really is "impromptu"? With H&S, what the audience sees is impromptu magic! That is where the impact comes from! The impact comes from what they perceive. As magicians, that is what we do, we give them a magical perception. The best impromtu I have ever seen, was well planned. BroDavid
