Does anyone here feel that they have sucessfully created a genuine feeling of fear in an audience. I don't mean just startling them with a loud noise, but truly making them afraid, even for a few seconds?

I've done it in the past... not exactly my favorite emotion to elicit, but in this line of magic you can't always control how everyone feels. Although the first time I remember it was pretty funny to me. It was back when I was going to a pretty hardcore christian school. I did the Balducci for a teacher, because everyone had been telling him all the crazy things I had been doing... He freaked out pretty badly. I enjoyed that one just because he was a nutball.
Coming soon... Who knows!

Oh yeah!
There are some folks out there that will think you're a demon when you do magic. I've had it happen in impromptu situations. |

True story (why do I feel like I lose all credibility when I start with that):
Not a magic trick, though. I once opened the door to find a couple of friendly JW's passing out literature. In my hand was Eugene Burger's book "Strange Ceremonies" opened to the page with Max Maven holding a knife and fork over a baby on a platter. They apologized for bothering me and left almost immediately without trying to give me anything. Strange ceremonies, indeed. Mark PS I'm not passing judgment, just making an observation, but don't topics like this always remind you of the letters to Penthouse Forum, not that I've ever read anything like that or anything.

What's this about hot women doing wild taboo things? Oh, er, yeah. You were talking about a book or something. (Sorry!)

Every show. It's so nice to give people an unedited response.

Mark,
LOL! While fear is not a goal for many Bizarrists, it is one mine. If I don't scare the socks off a good percentage of clients, I consider it a failure. A few months back I went to a "Ghost Hunters" meeting on "Meetup.com". I used my monkey's paw as a pendulum, and was asked not to come back . . . They were scared that I would attract the wrong type of supernatural. They were pretty "ditzy" too. |

Well, they claimed to be that, but it seemed more of a social group of "believers" than any serious "hunters". They seemed happy when a leader's girlfriend got goosebumps - a SURE sign of a ghost, as we all know.
Actually, If one could get a video of this, or have a reporter there, it would be great publicity. |

Strangely, I find FEAR to be a motivating factor to my show.
I enjoy keeping the audience on the edge of their seats... the last 20 minutes of my show is a stage sized Seance and Spirit Cabinet act that scares the Beejeebus out of the audience. And I find that my audience not only enjoys it ... but comes back for more! My grandfather used to do a 2 and a half hour show based on Grand Guignol theatrics and Spirit work LIVE on stage. He obtained a rather kreepy reputation for his stage personality. This exerpt is taken from the History section of the Carnival Diablo website written about my grandfather and how he was percieved... 'While travelling throughout Canada in the early 20th century, many settlers were superstitious. When Prof Lewchuk performed magic and sideshow feats, many people thought that he must be working in league with the devil. It was not unusual to have many people in the audience ' cross themselves" after a feat was done. Fear and Superstitions ranked high among Canadian Pioneers but there was always sold out shows. Weird tales would take shape as Prof Lewchuk's Midway and Shows entered their town. Old timers still recall stories that followed each act. After watching Lewchuk's masterful performances in round-eyed wonder, they would gather in little knots to discuss what they thought they had seen. Some confided that on their way to the theatre they had seen black cats also heading that way. An old lady, who saw the performance at Gorlitz, swore she saw a black devil sporting a long tail sitting on the chimney. All were certain Lewchuk had a "devil under his armpit" - an old Ukrainian belief that, if a person wanted his own personal incubus to do his bidding, all he had to do was take one of those miniature first effort eggs laid by a young hen, put it under his arm pit and wait a period of nine months when the egg was supposed to hatch a tiny devil ready to obey his master. Others saw devils under tables and in around props. While his acts awed them, most of his fellow countrymen also feared Lewchuk with a religious fervour.' Here is a picture of my grandfather Prof. N.P. Lewchuk, taken in 1925... Click here to view attached image.

Sorry, Doc, I can't see the picture. I just get the little, irritating red "X" in a box. You don't know how much I would like to see your show!

I may be taking the show into the States. PM me and let me know what area you are in. You will be on my permanant guest list. Scott McClelland The Paranormal Show
