Is there anything worse than this you could possibly do in the middle of a trick?

Do you mean tricks where the magician actually leaves the room as part of the presentation? I'm curious.

I think vomiting on your audience would be worse than a little flatulence...(Ahh College Fraternity parties I miss thee)

Somewhat off topic, but I was at a show recently where the performer closed a rather looong (at least it felt that way) set with a blindfold act. As soon as the last bit of tape and the blindfold was in place, several people got up and left.

Someone did this in the parlor at the magic castle. He had made a mistake and forgot his prediction envelope. Yikes.
He played it well though and no real harm done. That was probably a worst case scenario.

Some very funny answers and stories here, but yes, I was referring to those tricks where, as part of the presentation, the instruction is for the magician to leave the room, while the audience/assistant performs some secret selection process or whatever, that the magician isn't supposed to observe.
As a rule I don't even like tricks where the magician turns his back (this is not a major issue with me, just something I find distracting and therefore to be avoided) Leaving the room is even worse, it stops the show dead in its tracks..

In casual performances for friends and family, its actually very fun to do. I personally did it once with "Lazy Man's card trick".

I never perform these type of tricks since one time a while ago. I was performing a card trick , which , required a spectator dealing cards face down into a pile ( I had turned my back because it was a 'secret' number) as soon as I did a guy , who had been trying to wreck the whole show , grabbed the cards and shuffled them , destroying my crimp at the bottom. People who are like this will take up these chances to ruin your show. Oh and before you ask , he wasn't innocently shuffling because he didn't know better , he was the Mr. IKnowitall type.
Know your spectators. It's okay to use these tricks , as long as you know non of your spectators are Idoits. as for killing the atmosphere - I think turning your back and staying in sight is okay , but if your going to another room it had better be a good trick to justify it. |

I have found this "the magician leaves the room while..."-step I many older books of magic. I think there are several in f.ex. "Scarne on Card Tricks". I consider it a greeting from a now extinct culture. From an era, when nobody vere too busy, and you were happy to spend an evening in good company enjoying a very few tricks.
And remember: As a performer you had no need to worry about beeing compared with a wealth af professional (electronic) entertainment, as today. Almost every kind of entertainment was welcome. You can look at these tricks as a variation of the wellknown type of partygames: You leave the room. Somebody arrange a kind of puzzle. And you return and try to solve the mystery. The more time it takes, the better. This is the opposite of the modern magic trend: Fast, visual, smack in the face magic. I am sure a magician with the right personality and the right trick (perhaps more mental?) can make a sensation by leaveing the room and return in the right way. Personally I use to jump to the next trick, when I read the sentence in a book. Trolle |

I'm a little apprehensive every time I do Scott Alexander's Shattered, and have to turn my back so a spectator can mix the bags up. I know one of these days I'll get a smart *ss who will peek under a bag, but I suppose even that "now extinct culture" that Trolle referred to had it's share of smart *sses.

Using a machete on random audience members would be worse than leaving the room...

My guess is that it would not go over nearly as well.

I once saw a very well-known UK magician, on-stage, put both his hands in his pockets and scratch his balls so vigorously that the change in his pocket rattled. Honestly. Don't ask me to name him,. even in PM. I have witnesses too.
